Take a boat trip through the majestic Nuuk Fjord and visit an Arctic farm at the bottom of the fjord. Neriunaq is a sheep farm on the shore of a quiet bay. Being deep into the fjord, the summers are warm and mild, and vegetation is greener and higher here than on the coast.

The 2½ hour boat trips take you past waterfalls and towering peaks with walls raising straight from the water. Icebergs are shades of sparkling white, blue and green and change shape as we pass by. You will hear the chattering sound as they melt, if there is one close enough to get close to and observe. There are chances that we encounter whales and seals, and we will be on the lookout for white-tailed eagles.

At the farm, we will be greeted by the family, who will show us around and tell us about their everyday life, while we taste some of their homegrown products of the season. The kids may be around if it’s summer vacation. They go to the school in the small settlement just across the bay, by a short boat ride every day.

Life on the farm is blended into the Arctic nature, rich with herbs and berries, reindeer roaming the land, the only salmon river in Greenland, Arctic char, cod, and schools of capelin. This is not the first attempt to farm this far up north.  The Norse people who arrived to Greenland more than a thousand years ago, settled in South Greenland and then moved up the coast. Nuuk Fjord is one of the major areas where they farmed and raised livestock, and there are numerous ruins from the Norse era in the fjord.

On our way back from the farm, we will make a stop in the settlement of Kapisillit. This is the only place in the fiord where people still live year round.  Drop into the general store that has daily items from rifles and furniture, to baby food or freshly baked bread. Or take a walk around the small and beautiful place, following the footpaths that have a grand view over the fjord.
