Do you want to take some amazing photos of the Arctic landscape, then this tour is the one for you.

Greenland is a land of harsh contrasts. A long and cold winter turns into an intense summer with never-ending light. To the west, approximately around the middle of the island lies the Disko bay, a still-water haven and amazing landscapes all around. Just south of the city Ilulissat lies Sermeq Kujalleq, the fastest flowing glacier in Greenland, which is only surpassed by the great Antarctic, spits out gigantic icebergs that follow the 60 km fjord out into the bay where we will be sailing. From an intense summer of never-ending sun, it finally hits the horizon at the end of July, producing unbelievable light all over the bay and its many icebergs. We will be sailing out right at these opportune moments for the best light, in the comfort of a big and fast Targa boat and guidance from award-winning professional photographer Erez Marom. The Disko bay is huge, which is why the Targa is the perfect boat for exploring and zooming around the bay.

If you'd like to extend your experience, you can buy the 3 night addition to Uummannaq, which you can read more about here, note that it does not include the flight ticket to the destination, or back from it.

Sails will usually range between 4-5 hours, covering sunset, sunrise and the Arctic night inbetween.

  • Post-processing lectures and critique sessions in the hotel's conference rooms.

  • Taxes on all services listed above

  • Single room supplement (€720)

  • Non-meal-time soft drinks

  • Non-meal-time snacks

  • Alcoholic drinks

  • Extracurricular activities such as city walks, museum visits, dedicated whale-watchig trips in the afternoon, etc. (I'll be happy to arrange those for you).

  • Insurance. It is mandatory to insure yourself against physical injury, and highly recommended to insure your photo gear. Tour leaders will not be responsible in case of any personal injuries or damage to photographic gear as a result of an accident during the workshop. A good insurance policy can make a big difference should something happen, and ensure a safe return home.

  • Thermal clothing and winter gear.

  • Airfare to and from Ilulissat Airport (JAV), Greenland. You can fly in through Copenhagen (CPH) and through Reykjavik domestic airport (RKV). It is highly recommended to book flights as early as possible.

What to bring:
  • A digital camera, preferrably a DSLR camera with a full-frame sensor, since these cameras have better low-light capabilities. However, a crop-sensor DSLR will also completely suffice. A compact camera can be used, as long as you understand its limitations. NOTE: I highly recommend bringing two camera bodies. It will make your life much easier when shooting with multiple lenses, which is often desired.

  • A light tripod for shooting on land.

  • An ultra wide angle lens (preferably stabilized). For example, a Canon 16-35mm IS on a FF sensor camera, or a Nikon 10-24 on a crop sensor camera.

  • A mid-range zoom lens such as a 24-70mm (preferably stabilized).

  • A telephoto zoom lens, such as a 70-300mm or 100-400mm - the longer the better, preferably stabilized. I use a Canon 70-300mm in addition to a Sigma 150-600mm for telephoto shots.

  • Recommended: A filter set for landscape photography.

  • Thermal gear is essential. I recommend bringing a few light thermal shirts, a fleece jacket and a down coat for the cold nights.

  • Warm gloves. It's important to use gloves which enable you to operate the camera while wearing them.

  • Thermal long-johns

  • Thermal socks. I recommend bringing at least 2 pairs.

  • A neck-warmer or a scarf

  • A good warm hat which covers your ears.

  • Hiking shoes.

  • Sun glasses and sunscreen

  • Bug spray and head net for shooting from land locations (mosquito situation varies).

Good to know:

Please note that we need 1-2 working days in order to fully confirm your seat on this tour.

The itinerary is subject to change according to weather conditions. Although the waters in Disko bay are usually pretty calm there can be days with a few waves, so if you're especially prone to motion sickness, bring pills for it.

Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival to Ilulissat

Arctic Nights Photography Workshop | Ilulissat | Disko Bay

Tonight we'll meet up at the hotel, right after you've been picked up at the airport and had some rest in your room. The hotels' restaurant will serve a beautiful dinner, and whilst enjoying the food we will have a meet'n'greet and get to know each other while discussing the plans for the upcoming days. Right after dinner it's time for our first adventure, venturing out on the speedboat into the wonderful Disko bay.

Day 2 - Adventure nights

Arctic Nights Photography Workshop | Ilulissat | Disko Bay

Out of the 5 nights we will spend 4 of them out on a boat ride, beginning around 23:00, and staying out there for several hours, so make sure you dress up well and warm for it! We will venture out to find the most interesting icebergs and compositions during the perfect sunset and sunrise hours that are only between 1 and 2 hours apart this time of year. The speedboat gives an overwhelming advantage to quickly finding the best spots, so get ready for the adventure of a lifetime! When the sunrise has ended and everyone has some great shots we'll head back to the hotel and get some sleep. The next day will start late morning / early afternoon where we can do some critique sessions and go for walks around town, with its many beautiful viewpoints, buildings and interesting museums. And the venture out when sunset approaches. When we sail there is a high probability of finding whales, although never guaranteed.

Other highlights of this trip includes visiting settlements to the south and north of Ilulissat, and hiking to the edge of the Kangia Icefjord right in the UNESCO area.
