Come along on this tour and experience the life of the hunters and fishermen of North Greenland for a week in the winter.

You will arrive at the town of Uummannaq, far north of the Arctic Circle. Here the winters are long and full of snow, you will see a stunning landscape of frozen fjords, where the icebergs are caught, with a backdrop of the iconic heart-shaped Uummannaq mountain. Uummannaq is an island located in a big fjord, which freezes in winter. In winter the sea ice turns into a highway for the local people and hunters, who on dogsleds, snowmobiles, and sometimes in cars travel far on the ice.

On this 8 days tour, you will truly experience to travel on a dogsled, as it not only will serve a means of transportation but also your bed. You will travel out of Uummannaq on the dogsled with a local hunter and join him on his daily life, help out with setting out long lines for fishing under the ice and go seal hunting. Being a hunter in these areas is not always easy and you will have to live on the terms of the surrounding nature. Your patience will be tested and you will work hard, but also have fun, experience a silence like nowhere else and get really close to the hunter and his sled-dogs.

Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Uummannaq

Dogsled expedition | Hunting and fishing on sea ice | Uummannaq | North Greenland

Today is the first day of your big hunting adventure in the Uummannaq area. At arrival you will be picked up at the heliport and taken to the guesthouse, where you will spend the first night.

What you arrive to might be like something, you have never seen before - a beautiful white landscape of snow and ice. After a stop at the guesthouse, you will be taken down to the ice, where you will meet with the hunter, who will take you along hunting for the next days. You will also be introduced to some other very important travel companions, the sled dogs.

In the evening you will have a good dinner with your guide/hunter, where the plans for the coming days will be introduced in more detail and you will also be briefed about safety. Apart from that you can of course talk about daily life in Uummannaq.

Get back to your guesthouse and have a good night's sleep before waking up to tomorrow's big adventure.

Day 2 - Dogsledding into the fjord | preparing the net and long line | camping on the ice

Dogsled expedition | Hunting and fishing on sea ice | Uummannaq | North Greenland

The day will start at 9 AM on the ice - where you met the hunter and dogs yesterday. After breakfast, you will make sure that everything is packed and ready for heading out in the big wilderness. You will probably experience that the dogs are just as eager and excited at you to go.

You will be venturing north from Uummannaq. The first thing to get done is setting out the net for seal hunting. When the net is out it is time to find a good spot for camping, and lastly prepare the long line for fishing halibut.

Your house for the week is on the sea ice. A tent is erected over the dogsled, which becomes the sleeping platform. With furs of reindeer or muskox and the sled, a stove burning beside, you may be surprised how warm it can be.

When the work for the day is done it is time to get a good and filling dinner, before getting some rest to get "back to work" tomorrow.

Day 3 - Ice fishing | hunting in the fjord by dog sled

After you have gotten up from your first-night camping on the ice, the first mission of the day is to set out the long line for fishing halibut. For setting out the line you first need to make a hole in the thick ice and then lower the line into the sea underneath. The line can be hundreds of meters long and hold a catch of a lot of halibut, which is very important for the local population of this area.

After setting out the line you will head out with the dogsled for hunting seal.

Day 4 - Harvesting halibut, making dry fish

Dogsled expedition | Hunting and fishing on sea ice | Uummannaq | North Greenland

Today we will go back and check the long lines that we set out yesterday. Hopefully there will be a good catch of halibut. Getting up the line can be hard work - it is a long line, you need to get the fish off the hooks and make sure everything doesn't get tangled as you go. When it is cold outside the fish you catch will at times almost freeze instantly, as you get it up from the hole in the ice. This halibut is for drying, so you will help out preparing for the drying of the fish.

When everything regarding the halibut fishing is done, you will head out again to try your luck with hunting seal and pick up the nets, that were set out for seal hunting on the first day.

Day 5 - Hunting by dogsled

Today is the last full day of hunting, as we already took up the long line and nets for seal hunting, we will see if we can spot other Arctic animals, that we can hunt. We will spend the day, driving around on the dogsled to other areas than the ones we have already explored. Hunting is always exciting, as you can never be sure, what might come your way.

Tonight is your last night camping out on the sea ice - enjoy it! Embrace the silence and being far away from civilization.

Day 6 - Dogsled trip back to town, Greenlandic dinner with a local family

Dogsled expedition | Hunting and fishing on sea ice | Uummannaq | North Greenland

It is time to head back to Uummannaq. You will have to gather all of your camping gear, the catch of the trip and pack the sled before going back. Getting back might take a while, as you have driven far from the town. Depending on the weather, you can probably already from far away from Uummannaq recognize the iconic mountain, that shoots up like a tower behind the town.

Now you might start to look forward to a warm shower, when you get back to the guesthouse, but first you will need to unpack the sled. In the evening you are invited to join for a good and warming Greenlandic dinner with the local family. You will be able to share your stories from the adventure you have just returned from. After the dinner you can enjoy a good nights sleep at the guesthouse.

Day 7 - Town walk, and reflections of your trip

After the long trip you have been on, today is just reserved for taking it easy. You will however be invited to join on a little walk around town with a guide, who can tell you stories - stories from both traditional and modern life in Uummannaq.

You can just enjoy the day and get to do the things you would like to before you leave. Soak up the atmosphere; observe daily life and maybe you can find some nice souvenirs to bring back home, as a memory from your very special adventure.

Day 8 - Departure from Uummannaq Departure from Uummannaq
