Background of Ilulissat City
Ilulissat is the 3rd largest city in Greenland, attuning both traditional- and modern culture.
The balance between modern- and traditional culture is seen through the use of traditional means of transportation and the occupation the area holds, in a modern world.
Ilulissat holds around 4500 inhabitants, 4 hunting and fishing settlements and is the capital of the Disko Bay. The town is the entrance to North Greenland, as it is the center of culture, transportation and administration.
The city inherited its name Ilulissat, meaning icebergs, due to its rich ice fjords, calving out from the Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier. Ilulissat is situated at the stunning mouth of the 40 kilometer long Kangia Icefjord. The icefjord surrounding the city, has forced Ilulissat, with its beauty, to claim the frozen bodies of water as its trademark, attracting visitors from all over the world.
Ilulissat icefjord is a part of the world heritage list of UNESCO, due to its azure colossal ice sculptures, hiding vanished ages deep within its core.

Dress after the 3-layer structure there is adequate, whereby each has its own specialized purpose: a moisture transfer base layer next to your skin, then one or more adjustable insulating layers, and finally an outer shell to protect you from rain and wind.

Day 1 - Arrival day at Ilulissat
Today your adventure begins! Check-in at Reykjavik domestic airport for the flight to Ilulissat is at least 1 hr prior to departure. You will depart from Reykjavik 10:15 or 10:45, here a 3 hours flight awaits you. You will be travelling high above the icecap of Greenland and the sky high Greenlandic mountain tins, on your journey to Ilulissat. You arrive in Ilulissat 11:30 or 12:00, depending on the departure of the day.
After arrival, you will be transfered to your hotel accommodation. When you have settled in, a guided city walk awaits you! With the culture-historical walk, you will get an enhanced understanding of the Greenlandic culture and history. The guide will tell you about the history of the city, the Greenlandic culture and the modern life 300 km north of the Arctic Circle. Included in the guided city walk, is a visit to the local museum and church. The museum is located in the house, once owned by the polar explorer Knud Rasmussen and the church will enchant you with its beautiful interior.
For your evening adventure – you will be sailing in the orange rays of midnight sun in the UNESCO World heritage, Ilulissat ice fjord. This an exceptional experience you do not want to miss out while visiting Ilulissat. During the year, more than 46 km3 of ice flows into the fiord. The result is gigantic icebergs, which can be more than 100 metres on each side and with a height on more than 100 metres above the water surface. These giants strand at the end of the fiord, and that gives a good opportunity to sail among them. This boat trip at bright night is definitely an extraordinary experience!
Day 2 - Camp Eqi
You wont find a place as beautiful as Ilulissat. Wonders of the arctic, such as Ilulissat icefjord is not the only to be found. Your adventure of the day, takes you to the Glacier, Eqi.
You depart from Ilulissat in your boat transfer 07:00 AM. You will be traveling in a modern and convenient tourist boats, with a heated salon and an outdoor deck. A small and light breakfast will be served on board, there is also tea and coffee on board and the opportunity to buy beer and water.
Your journey will take you through the west Greenlandic nature, in the presence of icebergs making their way into the Atlantic ocean! Be on watch for the Great Greenland whale, playing hide and seek between the waves. When nearing the glacier, lunch will be served with a nice view overlooking the glacier from a distance.
From here you will move closer to the majestic ice brink, and stand in the soaring of the calving glacier. Next destination of the day, will be Port Victor. Port Victor is the docking area for you and your fellow explorers, staying at Eqi camp.
Adventures awaits for you at Eqi Camp! It's possible to take an optional hike from Camp Eqi:
Approx. 4-5 hour hike to the lagoon, the moraine and the glacier.
From the huts you hike around the small lagoon at the southern end of the glacier. There are often large flocks of geese in the lagoon in the breeding season. The trip goes further up the moraine where you and your fellow explorers can look down into the enormous cracks in the glacier few meters away from us. From here you will also get an overview of a large part of the 70m high glacier-front and we will see the impressive calvings from the glacier.

Day 3 - Return to Ilulissat
Today, you have hopefully spend the day exploring the surrounding of Camp Eqi, and met the camp mascot – an arctic fox, that roams the area. You and your fellow explorers return the same way you came, as the route never stops to impress. Let the arctic winds slip through your fingers, as you venture out on the Greenlandic seas. When returning to Ilulissat, be on the look out for arctic sea creatures. Even for the trained eye, it is hard to spot the whales and seals – so the captain will be at your assistance. From The harbor you will be transferred back to your hotel.
Day 4 - Hiking to the old settlement of Sermermiut
Today you are going to explore the inuit lands of Sermermiut valley. Sermermiut have been inhabited by different inuit cultures for 4000 years, and today you can still find artefacts of the vanished ages. You will on first hand witness the presence of their existence! Hear the story about the life and the customs of the Greenlanders before the Europeans´ arrival; see the ruins, the kitchen mitten, and feel the permafrost with your own hands. It is possible to do the hike yourself, as Sermermiut valley is located 1 ½ kilometres outside Ilulissat City – but we prefer to guide you safely to the area. Your guide will brief you about the safety precautions, that apply hiking the Greenlandic tundra. When returning to Ilulissat, we will make a stop at ‘’Kællingekløften’’, which is a large, cliff diving into the icy ocean. The cliff holds ancient stories, as the cliff was used by the inuits for survival. The elders would sacrifice themselves, by jumping into the ocean.
Day 5 - Departure day
Get up early and bring your fellow explorers, for an optional tour or short hike in the area, before returning to Iceland. You will be transferred from your hotel to the airport. You land in reykjavik 18.25 and this is where your adventure ends!
