Come to North Greenland, to the magical landscape of ice and snow illuminated by the Northern lights. Meet the locals and travel together with them. Your catch of the day will become your dinner. Make a little souvenir using material from the local nature. Bundle up in warm winter clothes, hop onto the dogsled, and let the eager dogs take you into a fascinating landscape of icebergs frozen into the fjord.

Uummannaq is a small town in northern Greenland.  Not far from Ilulissat, you take a short plane trip and a beautiful helicopter flight to reach our town. The fiord freezes in the winter and local traffic is by dogsled over the sea ice. Houses are cosy and warm, the infrastructure is modern, and this is blended with the traditional ways of making a living, in harmony with the Arctic nature.

Enjoy the quiet and calm of taking a walk, where the only sounds are some dogs howling in the distance and the faint squeaking of your boots on the snow. The sky is full of stars, you will be surprised at how bright moonlight can be, and with luck, you may be greeted by northern lights. Greenlandic homes are warm and comfy. Let’s enjoy stories and some good laughs together. We welcome you into our everyday life, to give you an experience of life in the high Arctic North.

Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival to Uummannaq, dinner over a pot of muskox

Experience Winter in the Arctic | Uummannaq | North Greenland

Welcome to Uummannaq, a small town deep into the Arctic, nestled under a heart-shaped mountain. That is what Uummannaq means – shaped like a heart – and many people lose their heart to the warm cozy atmosphere in town.

You will be met at the airport, and greeted by the sled dogs around town, as we drive to the guest house. You are free to walk around and take in the surroundings of our charming town. Don’t pet or feed the dogs please, you can touch them only when the owner says yes, and is together with you.

Dinner is a warm pot of muskox, very tasty and totally organic. All local food in Greenland is organic, a luxury that we have up here. We will introduce you on the plans for the following days, and tell you stories from the area.

Included:

Dinner: Muskox pot

Day 2 - Catch your dinner, make your souvenir

Experience Winter in the Arctic | Uummannaq | North Greenland

We go out onto the sea ice to try our hand at ice fishing. This is a favorite pass time for locals, and also an important source of income for fishermen, who go further out into the fiord to catch halibut.

The landscape in front of town is different every winter, because the icebergs frozen into the sea are never the same. We walk past the dogs tethered on the sea ice in front of town, ready to go out fishing and hunting. There may be a nice big iceberg close enough to take a walk to. Your catch for the day will be dinner, so let’s get some nice tasty fish!

Back in town, try your hand at using some local material, such a tusk or bone, and different kinds of fur. Nothing of what we catch is wasted, and the tradition to make clothing, mittens, or hunting tools is still alive today, and is a favorite way for locals to spend the dark winter days. We help you make your own little souvenir from Greenland, such as a pendant or a key holder.

Included:

Breakfast: Mini buffet

Lunch: Sandwich with meat of the season and vegetables

Dinner: Your catch of the day

Day 3 - Dogsledding around Uummannaq island

Experience Winter in the Arctic | Uummannaq | North Greenland

Winter in North Greenland is all about dogsledding. This has been the local means of transportation for generations, and is still used to go to hunting and fishing grounds, and to visit settlements in the area.

We take a leisurely tour around the island of Uummannaq, checking out the icebergs. We may meet some fishermen on the way, or see some seals on the ice in the distance. We have lunch out on the ice in the area north of the island.

We will make a stop at Santa’s House, and go in for some coffee, tea and cake. Santa may be out on his sled, but you will hear the stories about him and his elves in Greenland.

A short dogsled drive will bring us back to town, with stories in your backpack and photos on your camera.

Included:

Breakfast: Mini buffet

Lunch: Sandwich with meat of the season and vegetables

Dinner: Soup of Greenlandic catches

Day 4 - Cultural and historical sites of town, snowmobile tour

Experience Winter in the Arctic | Uummannaq | North Greenland

Take a stroll around town with a local guide, to see both the traditional and modern sides of life in the North. The town has a history of missionaries, whalers and merchants coming in the 1700’s, and before that a long history of Inuit life in the area. Although remote, infrastructure in Greenland is modern, and the young generation travels out to the world. Our tour follows the group's interests and what you would like to know.

We also take a snowmobile tour to one of the small settlements in the area, where the population is around 200. Life here is very close to the rhythm of nature. The weather, where the animals are, the movement of ice and tide, are what governs traditional life in the Arctic.

Included:

Breakfast: Mini buffet

Lunch: Sandwich with meat of the season and vegetables

Dinner: Whale stew

Day 5 - Departure from Uummannaq

Experience Winter in the Arctic | Uummannaq | North Greenland

Enjoy your helicopter flight from Uummannaq to the airport in Qaarsut. It will look different, now that you know how the locals live from the gifts of nature under the sea ice. We hope to see you again in Uummannaq.

Included:

Breakfast: Mini buffet
