South Greenland has many adventures to offer. Fjords and glaciers calving blue icebergs, fields of green grass and small areas of trees, a rare sight in the Arctic.

In South Greenland one also finds archaeological remains from both the Inuit and Viking settlers.

Narsarsuaq is the gateway to South Greenland, with a small international airport and a hotel.

The Narsarsuaq area offers a huge diversity of experiences as boat tours, hikes in the nearby valley and to the Inland Ice Cap.

The City of Narsaq is typical Greenlandic, and charming with its old colourful houses. Here a modern lifestyle is mixed with more traditional life, and fishermen still arrive in the harbor each day.

Founded in 1959, Narsaq is the youngest town in Greenland, although some of the oldest Norse ruins, dating back to AD 1000, are found in the backcountry here.

A local rock picker has created his own exhibit about minerals and rocks in the city center, and the history of South Greenland including the history of the Norsemen.

Trips to Greenland are always subject to weather conditions. Delays and flight cancellations can happen. Therefore we strongly recommend you to buy a travel insurance in the country of residence that would cover any additional travel expenses, should your flights be delayed or cancelled due to weather.

In Greenland the currency used is Danish Kroner (DKK), foreign currency is not widely accepted. It is recommended to bring Danish Kroner. In the towns credit cards are accepted in most stores. Using credit and debit card, an PIN-code is required. It is however handy to have some cash, in case of problems and if you for example wish to buy souvenirs directly from local artists.

Make sure to bring suitable clothes and footwear. The Greenlandic summer can be mild, but also cold. It can get cold at sea, as there is more wind. Bring light clothes that you can wear in layers and a wind/waterproof outer layer is advisable. As the sun can shine bright, so make sure to bring sunglasses and sunscreen.

Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Greenland - Narsarsuaq

Explore South Greenland | 6 Days

Today your adventure starts with a morning flight from Copenhagen, Denmark, straight to Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland.

The airport in Narsarsuaq is an old American airbase from second World War, that was used as a stop when flying from America to Europe. Today it serves as one of Greenlands few international airports. It is a small village with around 150 inhabitants.

At the airport you will be met by your guide and go to the hotel, where you will be spending the night. After check in you will have an information meeting with the guide, who will make sure you know everything you need for the tour. The guide will then take you on a guided tour in the Narsarsuaq area.

In the evening you are invited to have dinner at the hotel restaurant.

Day 2 - From Narsarsuaq to Narsaq

Explore South Greenland | 6 Days

After breakfast at the hotel, a boat lies ready at the harbour to take you to the town Narsaq. You will sail through the great Erik's Fjord! Stand on the deck of the boat and enjoy the view and fresh, crisp air. All around you will see the rough, yet gentle nature. South Greenland both has green rolling hills and steep mountains, you might even pass an iceberg on your way.

In Narsaq the destination guide awaits you and will take you to Hotel Narsaq, where you will spend the next couple of nights. At the hotel, you will have an information meeting with the guide about Narsaq. The guide will take you for a guided tour of the city and tell you everything you need to know.

In the evening you will be taken out on an iceberg safari and experience to sail among the beautiful icebergs, that slowly drift in the fjord coming from the Ice Cap heading to the big ocean. Enjoy the changing colours as the sun sets.

Day 3 - Visit the Ice Cap and Birdcliffs

Explore South Greenland | 6 Days

Now when you are in Greenland, you shall of course not miss the unique opportunity to see the great Inland Icecap. The Icecap covers around 80% of Greenland's surface! The ice is very much alive and constantly moves. On this tour you will see how the ice has carved its way through the landscape and meets the fjord, creating a flow of icebergs.

With a guide, who can tell you everything about what you see on the way, you will sail from north from Narsaq. The tour will go through the ice-filled Bredefjord and finally to the impressive Twin Glaciers, which is an amazing sight. We will go ashore in front of the glacier, where you can spend a while enjoying the view and exploring the landscape. Before going back on the boat, we will eat our packed lunch.

In Greenland the fjord systems seem to be never ending, and after lunch we will continue sailing into another fjord. Here you will see a lively bird cliff and a big waterfall before we will sail back to Narsaq.

Day 4 - Hike to Dyrnæs Peninsula

Explore South Greenland | 6 Days

Enjoy a nice breakfast at the hotel and fuel up for a hike to the Dyrnæs Peninsula. Bu do not worry, it is an easy hike and suitable for most travellers, just remember to wear some good hiking shoes!

On the hike we will go through the beautiful Arctic landscape, where we can enjoy the green, mountainous scenery. This place is however also rich on history both from old Inuit cultures and from the Vikings who settled in the area from around year 900. On the way we will see remains from the old Inuit and also a Viking ruin. The hike takes around 3 hours and on the way we will also have some light refreshments.

When we get back to Narsaq, you are invited to a local home for a little Kaffemik. Kaffemik is a traditional Greenlandic get-together, which is usually arranged at any possible celebration - for birthdays, weddings, first day of school, when a child hunts its first seal and at many other occasions. People then invite everyone they know, and in smaller villages everyone living there is usually invited, for dinner, cakes and coffee.

You will be invited to a slightly smaller version of Kaffemik, with coffee, cakes, and the opportunity to chat to the host about daily life in Narsaq - maybe you can hear some old stories as well.

As this is your last night in Narsaq you are invited to have farewell dinner at the hotel in the evening.

Day 5 - Return to Narsarsuaq

Explore South Greenland | 6 Days

Today you will have breakfast at the hotel before returning to Narsarsuaq by helicopter. See the landscape from a new angle from the window of the helicopter. Sometimes it is unfortunately not possible to go by helicopter for various reasons, if that is the case, the transfer back to Narsarsuaq will be by boat. This is nonetheless also a beautiful way to travel, where you can enjoy the fresh, crisp air as you cruise through the fjord.

You will stay at Hotel Narsarsuaq for the night.
