If you'd like to explore and see the diversity of Greenland. This is it.

Go on this tour and you will get the chance to explore Greenland from one end to the other. You'll be sailing from the northern part with its icebergs to the southern part of Greenland. When flying into Ilulissat, over the great Icecap, you might wonder, why this place is called Greenland. In the south, you will understand why the country got its name, as you will be surrounded by the grassy, green hills.

You'll get time offshore and onshore during this tour. You'll be stopping in cities - in the capital of Greenland but also in cities, not many have been in.

You'll get the chance to see icebergs. Sleddogs. Fjords. Mountains. You'll get the chance to learn about the Greenlandic culture. You'll get your chance to see what Greenland is.

You might be asking: Can I do anything apart from being on a ship, seeing beautiful landscapes and visiting cities?

YES. And by doing an 8-day-tour you'll get time enough to do so. You could go kayaking, hiking, go explore the Ilulissat Icefjord which is protected by UNESCO and much, much more.

Trips to Greenland are always subject to weather conditions. Delays and flight cancellations can happen. Therefore we strongly recommend you to buy a travel insurance in the country of residence that would cover any additional travel expenses, should your flights be delayed or cancelled due to weather.

In Greenland the currency used is Danish Kroner (DKK), foreign currency is not widely accepted. It is recommended to bring Danish Kroner. In the towns, credit cards are accepted in most stores and it is also possible to pay with card onboard the ship. Using credit and debit card, a PIN-code is required. It is however handy to have some cash, in case of problems and if you, for example, wish to buy souvenirs directly from local artists.

Make sure to bring suitable clothing and footwear. The Greenlandic summer can be mild, but also cold. It can get cold at sea, as there is more wind. Bring light clothes that you can wear in layers and a wind/waterproof outer layer is advisable. As the sun can shine bright and the reflections at sea make it even brighter, make sure to bring sunglasses and sunscreen.

Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Arriving in Ilulissat

Great Greenland Cruise | 8 Days | North to South

The day will start with a morning flight from Copenhagen Airport Kastrup to Kangerlussuaq. Get a window seat and enjoy the view that will open up before you when you fly over Greenland. On a clear day, you can enjoy the view of the vast icecap - a huge white landscape. Sometimes it is hard to see if you are flying above the clouds or if it is the icecap.

When you get closer to Kangerlussuaq the view of the Ice Cap will slowly turn into a view of mountains, lakes and fjords. The stop in Kangerlussuaq will not be long, as you have a connecting flight to Ilulissat shortly after arrival. In Ilulissat, you will be met at the airport by a guide and there will be transfer arranged to the hotel.

In Ilulissat, you will spend the night at Hotel Arctic - the world's most northerly 4-star hotel. After check-in at the hotel, there will be an information meeting with a guide, about your upcoming ship voyage along Greenland's west coast. You will not have a guide onboard the ship, but a representative to take you on guided tours in the different towns you come into. Listen carefully and ask all the questions you have at the information meeting. After the meeting, you will be taken on a guided tour of Ilulissat.

In the evening you are invited to a welcome dinner at the hotel. After dinner, a sunset cruise on the Icefjord is arranged. You will sail on the calm water among the huge icebergs, as the sun sets. Depending on the time of the year there might not be a sunset, but midnight sun, where the sun will shine for the whole night.

Day 2 - Eqi and Rodebay

Great Greenland Cruise | 8 Days | North to South

In the morning you can enjoy breakfast at the hotel 400 km north of the arctic circle, with a view over the fjord filled with icebergs. Today a tour to the very active glacier Eqi is arranged.

This tour combines two prime attractions around Ilulissat. You will visit the small settlement Rodebay, or Oqaatsut in Greenlandic, where around 40 inhabitants have their daily life, mainly being occupied with hunting and fishing. Rodebay is situated approximately 15 kilometres from Ilulissat and is only accessible by boat in the summer and in winter, by dogsled and snowmobile. From Rodebay the tour will continue to the great Eqi Glacier located around 80 kilometres north of Ilulissat.

We will sail through the beautiful Ataa fjord. This is a great place for spotting whales, so keep your eyes out for these playful giants of the sea. Soon the magnificent Eqi glacier appears. The glacier front stretches over 4 kilometres! An overwhelming sight that truly shows the grandeur of the Greenlandic nature. We will spend an hour in front of the glacier, getting as close as safety allows. Eqi is one of the few places where the conditions allow us to get quite close to a calving glacier. The fjord is an ever-flowing stream of icebergs in all shapes and sizes. The tour takes 7 hours, coffee, tea and a meal is included.

When you get back to Ilulissat you can have dinner at one of the many restaurants, that offer a wide range of both local and international food.

Day 3 - Explore Ilulissat

Great Greenland Cruise | 8 Days | North to South

Get a nice filling breakfast at the hotel to have plenty of energy for new adventures today.

Today is open for activities of your choice. You can either go out and explore Ilulissat on your or choose one of the activities mentioned below:

Option 1 - Sermermiut Hike:

This is an easy hike to the Sermermiut valley, beautifully located with a view over the Icefjord. You will drive by mini-bus as far as the road go and find a good path, leading to this historical place. On the tour, you will be led by a guide, who can tell you everything about the Inuit people, who used to live here, and the surrounding nature. At the Sermermiut valley, you will see the remains of the turf huts - with the view it is no wonder, people wanted to settle here. The tour takes around 3 hours.

Option 2 - Ilimanaq and Whale Safari:

Visit the settlement Ilimanaq combined with a whale safari in the Disko Bay. Ilimanaq is a small village south of Ilulissat with around 50 inhabitants. To get there we will sail through the mouth of Ilulissat Icefjord, past the icebergs. The sailing time can vary depending on the ice conditions. In Ilimanaq you will have a while to explore the village, where some of the old buildings recently have been nicely restored. Take your time to enjoy the quiet village life and the view of the fjord. After a while, it is time to continue the adventure on the Disko Bay. This is the prime summer-vacation spot for humpback whales. These magnificent sea creatures travel to the Disko Bay for the feasting on large groups of krill and small fish. Humpback whales are the most common, but you will be able to see humpback whales, minke whales, and fin whales. The captain will help you identify the many whales residing in the bay.

As this is your last evening in Ilulissat, a farewell dinner is arranged for you at Hotel Arctic. After dinner, you can enjoy the evening view of the Disko Bay from the hotel.

Day 4 - Ilulissat - Embark MS Sarfaq Ittuk

Great Greenland Cruise | 8 Days | North to South
