Come along on this magical journey north of the Arctic Circle, to the stunning seascapes of ice and midnight sun in the Disko Bay. The area is well known for its regular visits by humpbacks, fin whales and lots of seals, so make sure to keep an eye on the water! The Icefjord is usually very calm, barely with any waves, so spotting wildlife and capturing incredible reflections is definitely within grasp.
Disko Bay is located on the west coast of Greenland, where for the entire duration of the trip, the group will be staying at a 4-star hotel, to ensure the group will be well rested and well fed! The hotel is also within walking distance for all of Ilulissats gems, such as the colourful houses, dogsleds, warm-hearted locals, museums and fish markets, which are all great opportunities for experiences while the camera batteries are charging.
The unique thing about Greenland is the lack of highways and roads to connect villages, meaning that transport is easiest by sea, which means the tours will be with a chartered boat for the entirety of the adventure. During the journey you will get to visit a variety of Greenlandic villages and settlements such as; Oqaatsut, Aasiaat and Qasigiannguit.
Most of the travelling and photography will be during the night at the best hours of the midnight sun, where the conditions will be unlike anything you've ever experienced before! The sessions will often begin late in the evening and carry on into the night, to chase the best light and spectacular sceneries. When the sun is low in the horizon, the light becomes more saturated with deep icy blues as well as fiery red skies. This light lasts approx. 2-4 hours, which we will chase by cruising every evening.
This adventure is suitable for all levels of experience and ability, we have a savvy captain, with an uncanny ability to find the best spots from behind the rudder, as well as being used to working with photographers and knows the area extremely well.
However, note that the itinerary is subject to changes according to weather conditions, the one thing we promise is that we can get you to the best locations and help you go home with an inspiring catalogue you can be proud of!
So what are you waiting for! Click on 'Choose a date' above to join this 6 day, 5 nights adventure in wonderful Greenland.
We recommend the flight that will arrive in Ilulissat at 13:00, you can check www.airgreenland.com for flights from Copenhagen or www.airicelandconnect.com for flights from Iceland.
Iceland has a direct flight, so it could be an amazing idea to combine a trip in Iceland with going to Greenland. The arrival time is flexible, but make sure to arrive before 5 pm! Hotel Arctic provides a shuttle form the airport to the hotel - please tell us your inbound flight.
After dinner, we load the vessel and depart out to the icefjord, here there are some of the greatest icebergs in the world! For 3 hours we will sail and photograph during the best light, this tour is with photographers in mind, unlike the more touristic cruises you may book on a solo trip to Ilulissat. The cruise finishes around 2 or 3 a.m. where you will be free until breakfast.
After breakfast we will get together with the guides for some post-processing, after a wondrous and magical night, there are sure to be lots of questions. Afterwards, we'll have a leisurely afternoon, just planning for the evening and getting some much needed rest.
After dinner it is time again to venture out into the icefjord, starting a bit earlier this time, to continue the ice hunt but also to visit some of the settlements to the south, depending on the ice conditions. The settlements all have great colourful colonial buildings filled with character. On the voyage back to Ilulissat we go looking for some open water icebergs, these vary greatly in shapes and sizes, like castles, arches and towers. We will have plenty of time to photograph these during the best conditions under the midnight sun, and then arrive back in Ilulissat around 2 or 3 am.
After a late night, there will be some time to rest after breakfast. After a quick lunch, we will board the ship yet again for another adventure - this time to the north, heading to Oqaatsut - also known as Rodebay. It's a settlement with around 25 inhabitants, but with a lovely restaurant where we might opt. for lunch instead. Despite the low number of inhabitants, this place has a school, a hotel, a church and a shop!
That evening we will be eating at a place called 'whalehunters pub', however they don't have a huge variety of options so it might change - it depends on their weekly schedule.
After dinner we are heading back to Ilulissat to go for a night hike to the UNESCO world heritage site of Sermermiut. This hike will give a better view of where the icebergs are coming from, looking further into the icefjord than would be possible from the boat. The hike starts from the outskirts of Ilulissat, past the Seqinniarfik hilltop, where the locals come to greet the first rays of the sun on the 13th of january after a long dark winter. The hike is pretty straightforward, with about 1 hour to get there and another to get back, where a big part of it is on a wooden boardwalk. It offers some pretty striking scenery and hopefully some wildlife as well. Here we will also spend some time with our tripods and long exposures for some memorable photos of the icefjord.
After breakfast we will have another post processing session, then have some time to rest before heading out into another night in the water. We set sails just before midnight, exploring the icefjord in search of great compositions and light conditions, this area didn't become a UNESCO world heritage site for nothing, it is stunningly beautiful. After several hours gliding through the silence, we head back to port for a well deserved rest.
Having consumed a delicious breakfast, we will have a discussion with the award-winning photography guides, as there is probably a mountain of photos and questions to go through. The guides will do their best to satisfy your curiosity and try to help improve your skills as a photographer. As evening comes we will once again go to the amazing and everchanging scenery of the icefjord, looking for wildlife and whatever spectacle that might come before us.
After a hearty breakfast the time has come to say our farewells and goodbyes, we will meet and talk about some of the highlights of the trip. The transfer to the airport is included, but maybe you want to go explore more of Greenland, and we'd be happy to help you out with that, if not, you leave with the most vividly colourful memories, thousands of amazing photos and your skills with a camera, taken to another level
Please note that we need 1-2 working days in order to fully confirm your spot on the tour.
