Explore one of Greenland’s most attractive locations! On this package, you will, above all, get to experience the impressive Greenlandic nature decorated in fine blue and green colors, by icebergs and mountains.
South Greenland is especially known for its past as a former settlement of Norse people, it is right here, where the outlaw Viking, Eric the Red, fled from Iceland and settled here, thus marking the beginning of the Norse era in Greenland.
On this tour you’ll get to see South Greenlands greatest attractions. You’ll land in Narsarsuaq which is in the center of all the attractions, and already your adventure has begun. If you go up to the Signal Hill (1 hour walk) you’ll see a glimpse of the 1,8 mio. square km ice sheet. No better way to start your tour and it’s only going to get better.
You’ll visit the place where the word Greenland was used for the first time, at the place called Qassiarsuk - at the time known as Brattahlid. In spite of his temper he fell in love with Greenland and built his village that he named Brattahlid. After some hesitance with christianity, and eventually convinced by his wife, he built the first church and today its known as an open-air museum (entrance fee not included). This is going to be your first visit to a village, the next one is called one of the most beautiful villages in Greenland, Igaliku. Igaliku has plenty of hiking opportunities.
But you can’t leave Greenland without seeing icebergs, and we’ll make sure that you do so. You’ll go on a tour to the Qooroq icefjord by boat, where you can enjoy a drink that is cooled with ice, more than a 1000 years old, amongst white and blue icebergs. Check out the dates by clicking on “choose a date” above.
When you’ve arrived you can immediately begin with one of the first must-see locations. You can hike up to Signal Hill which is located 4 km from the airport (1 hour walk). From the top you can enjoy the view to the ice sheet. Or just relax by the café and enjoy a cup of coffee.
Today you’ll get an opportunity to get closer to the ice sheet, by the Narsarsuaq Glacier, it’s located 8 km from the airport. You’ll go on a nice and slow hike to the glacier where you also can see the Flower valley, the hike takes about 5-7 hours. You can actually touch the ice if you go 30 min. further down to the ice.
Qassiarsuk is located just across the fjord (in the bottom of the Tunulliarfik fjord), only 15 min. by boat from Narsarsuaq. This is the place where sheep farmers chose to settle, the exact same spot Eric the Red did more than a 1000 years ago. Here agriculture is the main income and has a population of about 40 people. The old buildings of the Norse era are today known as impressive open-air museum (fee not included). Learn more about it when you’re there!
You can also choose to go on a short hike to Sermilik fjord. Sermilik means “the place with ice” in Greenlandic, which you’ll understand as you get closer!
Since 2010 they annually arrange the ‘Leif the Happy Marathon’ and in 2018, 92 people participated.
Your day will start with another tour by boat through Tunulliarfik fjorden (Eric’s fjord), and eventually reach Itilleqs’ harbour which is connected to the sheep farm village, Igaliku. There are more than 60 villages in Greenland and Igaliku is said to be one of the most beautiful. Igaliku is located 4 km from Itilleq where there is a fine path, known as the ‘Kings Road’ that you can follow to the village. When you’ve reached the village you can sit and enjoy the view and the great landscape on the other side. Igaliku is located in the bottom of the fjord and sits surrounded by beautiful mountains, Igaliku actually means “the place like a pot” in greenlandic.
The village had a very important role in the Norse era, because it was here they had the episcopal seat. They called the place Gardar, and the ruins are impressive! Have your lunch at the hotels café, and finish the day by sailing back to Narsarsuaq.
You’ll say farewell to South Greenland by going on a fantastic experience along the Qooroq icefjord. Here you’ll see a gigantic wall of ice more than a 1000 years old! While you enjoy the view to the glacier the crew will take the most crystal clear ice from the sea for you to cool your drink. The engine will be stopped so you can enjoy the sounds of the icefjord in silence.
When you’re back in Narsarsuaq you can enjoy the rest of your stay by sitting in the café with a cup of coffee or take a last minute visit to the local museum.
