On this one week dogsled expedition you will travel with a local hunter/fisherman and follow his everyday life in the Arctic winter.

A unique opportunity to get close to a culture under pressure from climate change and modern society. You can try ice fishing, ride a dog sled and live in the magnificent Arctic nature. You do not have to shoot anything but can chase motifs with your camera.

You will go on the sea ice by dogsled, passing by icebergs frozen into the fjord. The only sound you hear is the swishing of the sled over snow. The pace of the dogsled is about the speed of a bicycle - perfect to take in the landscape.

The Inuit in Greenland have made their living from the sea for generations, and up north here in Uummannaq, there are many that live the traditional way. In the winter, when the sea freezes over, the fiord becomes a highway for dogsleds to travel to fishing and hunting grounds, and to settlements in the area. Life out on the sea ice is what sustain the families here. At the same time, technology in Greenland is modern, with handheld GPSs, and everyone following on Facebook.

Listen to the snow under your boots, marvel at how bright the moonlight is on icebergs, and share a laugh with the locals. Immerse yourself into life in the north, and feel the harmony with nature.

Good to know:

Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival to Uummannaq, meeting with your hunter guide

One week dogsled expediton | Uummannaq | North Greenland

You will be picked up at the heliport, and as we drive through the towns, and you settle into your rooms, you will be greeted by the howling of sled dogs. The view from the guest house is different every winter, with icebergs frozen into the fiord in front of town.

You will meet your local guide and the sled dogs that will take you out.

At the dinner that we have together, we will have a briefing on plans for the next days, including both experiences and safety.

This is normally a short evening, as you probably arrive from a long flight, and have a time difference too.

Just before going to bed, we urge you to go outside on your first evening in Uummannaq. Just stand still, listening to the city and maybe some dogs howling, take in the 100% clean cold air and enjoy the stars and maybe some northern lights.

Even if its snowing and you can't see the sky, this is still natural "Greenlandic mindfulness" far from your daily workload.

Day 2 - Dogsledding to fishing grounds

One week dogsled expediton | Uummannaq | North Greenland

We start the day with breakfast at the sea ice. Then the adventure begins, when we dogsled over the fiord, take in the fresh air, the rhythm of the dogs running, and enjoy the view of icebergs. The first destination is the hunting hut at Uummannatsiaq, to drop our bags. Then we are "off to work", by dogsled to the fishing grounds, and set up the long line for halibut. Evening at the hut is cosy, with warm local food, hunting stories, and if you are lucky there might be some northern lights out in the sky.

Day 3 - Check the fishing line, and visit a small setttlement

One week dogsled expediton | Uummannaq | North Greenland

We go out by dogsled to check the fishing lines and collect our catches. We then visit the settlement of Ikerasak to sell our catch. The Danish actor and author Flemming Jensen was a school teacher in this settlement during the 70's. His Christmas story about elves in Greenland is a classic favorite among kids and grown-ups in Greenland. You might find a bit of magic still lingering in this settlement.

We take a walk around the charming settlement, and visit a friend. Visiting family and friends is a staple of life in Greenland, and so cozy in winter time. We will eat together here, enjoy more stories, and stay over for the night.

Day 4 - Hunting for ”Uuttoq” - seal on the ice

One week dogsled expediton | Uummannaq | North Greenland

Hunting for "uuttoq" is a typical winter activity all over the Arctic. Seals are plentiful, and have been the daily bread for Inuit for millennia. Fishing and hunting is all about searching and waiting, and searching again. Tune all your senses to the environment, and to the movement of the animals. Your mind may be empty, or it may find the time and space to roam freely.

We also set up a new long line for halibut, and return to our winter hut in the wilderness.

Day 5 - Pick up catches from the fishing line, and dogsled back to Uummannaq

One week dogsled expediton | Uummannaq | North Greenland

This is our last day out in the fjord. By now you are into the rhythm of living out on the sea ice. We hitch up the dogs, check our long line to pick up the catches, exchange some laughs, sit down for a warm drink, and head back to town. The warm orange lights of Uummannaq greet your dogsleds.

Dinner this day is with a local hunter and his family. This will be a lovely evening, sharing stories of being out in nature.

Day 6 - Town walk and short hike to Santa’s House

One week dogsled expediton | Uummannaq | North Greenland

We take a short walk around Uummannaq. Your guide will talk about the culture, old times, tradition, and the mix with modern life. Questions from your experiences in the fiord will be answered, and impressions will be deeper as you have already stepped into our culture.

We also stretch our legs to take a walk out of town into the nature, to Santa house, nestled cozily in the snow and the foot of our heart-shaped mountain.

Day 7 - Departure from Uummannaq

One week dogsled expediton | Uummannaq | North Greenland

Enjoy the view from the helicopter flight from Uummannaq to the airport at Qarsut. The fiord that you dogsledded on spreads below your eyes, and you may recognize the shape of a favorite iceberg you passed.
