Nanortalik holds a population of around 1350 inhabitants and 5 villages.
The neighbouring sea ice, houses every now and then polar bears. The majestic creatures uses the sea ice as hunting and playing ground. Due to the often visiting polar bears, the town was given the name Nanortalik, directly translated to “The place with polar bears”.

The charming town, holds a white wooden church, with a core of history dating back to the colonial period. The church was established in the late colonial period, in 1916 and has since had an essential role, to the community, as choir singing is adored by all locals.
