Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Ilulissat

Visit Ilulissat, Ilimanaq and Kangerlussuaq | West Greenland

The day will start with a morning flight from Copenhagen Airport Kastrup to Kangerlussuaq. Get a window seat and enjoy the view that will open up before you when you fly over Greenland. On a clear day, you can enjoy the view over the vast Icecap - a huge white landscape. Sometimes it is hard to see if you are flying above the clouds or if it is the icecap. When you get closer to Kangerlussuaq the view of the icecap will be swapped with a view of mountains, lakes and fjords.

The stop in Kangerlussuaq will be short, as you have a connecting flight to Ilulissat shortly after arrival. In Ilulissat, you will be met at the airport by a guide and there will be transfer arranged to the hotel.

In Ilulissat, you will stay at Hotel Arctic - the world's northernmost 4-star hotel. After check-in at the hotel, there will be an information meeting before you will be taken on a guided city tour of the town.

In the evening you are invited to a 2-course welcome dinner at the hotel. After dinner, you can go out on the terrace and enjoy the view of the bay and icebergs. Depending on the time of year, there might also be midnight. If there is not midnight sun, there are at least good chances of a beautiful sunset.

Day 2 - Visit Eqi glacier and Rodebay settlement

Visit Ilulissat, Ilimanaq and Kangerlussuaq | West Greenland

In the morning you can enjoy breakfast at the hotel with a view over the fjord filled with icebergs.

Today a tour to the very active glacier Eqi is arranged.

This tour combines two prime attractions around Ilulissat. You will visit the small settlement Rodebay, or Oqaatsut in Greenlandic, where around 40 inhabitants have their daily life, mainly being occupied with hunting and fishing. Rodebay is situated approximately 15 kilometres from Ilulissat and is only accessible by boat in the summer and in winter, by dogsled and snowmobile. From Rodebay the tour will continue to the great Eqi Glacier located around 80 kilometres north of Ilulissat.

We will sail through the beautiful Ataa fjord. This is a great place for spotting whales, so keep your eyes out for these playful giants of the sea. Soon the magnificent Eqi glacier appears. The glacier front stretches over 4 kilometres! An overwhelming sight that truly shows the grandeur of the Greenlandic nature. We will spend an hour in front of the glacier, getting as close as safety allows. Eqi is one of the few places where the conditions allow us to get quite close to a calving glacier. The fjord is an ever-flowing stream of icebergs in all shapes and sizes. The tour takes 7 hours, coffee, tea and a meal is included.

When you get back to Ilulissat you can have dinner at one of the many restaurants, that offer a wide range of both local and international food.

Day 3 - Travel from Ilulissat to Ilimanaq

Visit Ilulissat, Ilimanaq and Kangerlussuaq | West Greenland

Enjoy a nice breakfast at Hotel Arctic and pack your luggage. The next two nights you will spend in Ilimanaq!

Ilimanaq is a charming settlement located around 15km. south of Ilulissat and is one of the smallets settlements in the Disko Bay. To get there you will have to sail through the mouth of the great Ilulissat Icefjord.

In Ilimanaq you will be staying in a luxury hut, located right at the waterfront with an amazing view to the bay. The huts opened a few years back, built in a modern style with everything you need for your stay. The front of the hut is a wall of glass, so you can enjoy the view, not only from the terrace, but also from the couch and even the bed on the first floor. Each hut has its own private bathroom as well.

During your stay in Ilimanaq all meals are included.

Day 4 - Full day in Ilimanaq

Visit Ilulissat, Ilimanaq and Kangerlussuaq | West Greenland

Today you have a full day of leisure in Ilimanaq. You can use the day as you wish - either just lean back and take it easy. You can enjoy the view from the balcony of your hut - see the icebergs slowly float by, if you are lucky you might even be greeted by a whale swimming by. You can take a walk around the settlement and observe the daily life of a small place like this.

There is also the option of going on an optional excursion. Ilimanaq offers different activities ranging from a home visit (Kaffemik). You will visit a local home, be offered coffee/tea, cake and a chat about daily life in this part of the world. Another option is going on a guided settlement walk and learn about the history of Ilimanaq. If you prefer a little bit more action and getting into the nature you can either join on a longer hike or UTV expedition to the ice cap. Day 5 - Travel back to Ilulissat

Visit Ilulissat, Ilimanaq and Kangerlussuaq | West Greenland

Enjoy your breakfast in Ilimanaq and enjoy the quiet morning before going back to Ilulissat.

You will sail back to Ilulissat across the mouth of the Icefjord. It is hard to get tired of the ever changing view of the icebergs. Like living creatures they are changing all the time and the light also makes them look different at different times of the day and weather. Lean back and take in the view. Here you also have chances of seeing whales, so remember to look out for them!

You will spend the last night in Ilulissat at Hotel Arctic. In the evening a three course farewell dinner is arranged at the hotel. Take advantage of the light summer nights and go for a walk. It is a special feeling to walk in the quiet, empty streets under the midnight sun. However do not stay up for too late, as you have a plane to catch tomorrow!

Day 6 - Visit the Greenland Ice Cap

Visit Ilulissat, Ilimanaq and Kangerlussuaq | West Greenland

Today you are traveling back to Kangerlussuaq, but first you can have breakfast and farewell coffee at the hotel in Ilulissat with your guide. Your guide will meet you and make sure you get the transfer from the hotel to the airport.

The flight from Ilulissat to Kangerlussuaq only takes around 50 minutes. If you get a seat by the window you can get a last look at the huge icebergs and really see how big the landscape is. In Kangerlussuaq you will stay at Hotel Kangerlussuaq, which is at the airport. After check in on the hotel, there will be an information meeting with the local guide.

A must-see when you are in Kangerlussuaq is the great Greenland ice cap - which covers most of the country's surface. Kangerlussuaq is one of the places, where you have the easiest access to visiting the ice cap. We will drive out of town. At slow speed we cruise through the beautiful landscape of valleys that glaciers have formed through the years and along great rivers. We will take our time and make some stops on the way, so you can take pictures and enjoy the fresh air. Before long we will reach the ice cap. A vast landscape of old ice will open up before you!

After exploring the ice cap for a while it is time to return to town. There are a few shops in Kangerlussuaq where you can buy the last souvenirs. Look out for products made from the delicate and warm musk ox wool - some of the lightest and softest wool in the world! In the evening you can have dinner at one of the restaurants.

Day 7 - Time to say goodbye

Visit Ilulissat, Ilimanaq and Kangerlussuaq | West Greenland

In the morning you will have breakfast at the hotel and then you might as well go down and check in to the flight - at least one hour before departure!

Around noon it is time for you to fly back to Copenhagen. If you have time, take a quick look in the shops around the airport and enjoy the last bit of Greenlandic summer before you wave goodbye.
