Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Greenlan

Winter Adventure | Ilulissat | Disko Bay

Today your adventure starts. You will travel from Copenhagen and go north - across the Arctic circle.

You will leave on a morning departure and because of the 4 hours time difference, it will still be morning, when you arrive in Greenland. You will first have a short stop in Kangerlussuaq before continuing on a domestic flight from Kangerlussuaq, which takes approximately 45 minutes.

At the airport in Ilulissat, there will be a transfer waiting to take you to your hotel. For the next four nights, you will be staying at Hotel Arctic - the northernmost 4-star hotel in the world!

After checking in at the hotel, there will be an information meeting about the program for the next days and where you can ask the questions you might have regarding this. When the meeting is over you will be taken on a walk around the city.

A city walk is a good way to start, as you will get an introduction to the place you are visiting, learning its history and about daily life, you will also get more familiar with the city and see which places you would like to come back to and explore further on your own.

In the evening you are invited to have a welcome dinner at Hotel Arctic, where you are staying.

Day 2 - Dog sledge adventure

Winter Adventure | Ilulissat | Disko Bay

Wake up to a full day of winter adventures, but before you venture out, enjoy a good and filling breakfast at the hotel. From the hotel, you have a beautiful view over the fjord. It is nice to spend some time at the breakfast table and enjoy the view of the fjord and the surrounding nature.

The dogsled has been an important means of transportation for the Inuit people of Greenland for many years. The dogs are persistent travel companions and can be trusted in all kinds of weather. Dogsledding is a unique experience, where you see how human and animals can work together. It is a special and quiet way to experience nature, without the sound of engines, you will swish over the landscape only hearing the many stomping paws and the wind.

The dogsled adventure is 2 hours long. For the sledge trip, you will be provided with a polar suit for keeping warm. Please also note, that dogsledding is not advised for people, who have back problems and you have to be in a fairly good physical shape. There will be two people on the sledge.

When you get back, you can go to the hotel to get the heat and maybe go to one of Ilulissat's many restaurants in the evening to have a nice meal. You will find a wide range of restaurants offering different menus - from local Greenlandic food to fusion cuisine with inspiration from Asian food.

Day 3 - Home visit and northern lights

Winter Adventure | Ilulissat | Disko Bay

Enjoy a breakfast at the hotel and have a nice and relaxing morning. Today's programme consists of a visit to a Greenlandic home and a snowshoe walk under the northern lights.

Before the home visit, you will have some time off. You can either go for a little walk around the hotel or take a little visit to downtown Ilulissat. In town, there are some museums and shops that could be interesting to visit. If you get tired of walking around, you can find a cosy café and enjoy a hot beverage - but remember that you are going to a home visit, where you also will have coffee and cakes.

A home visit like this is in Greenlandic called "Kaffemik" - a traditional get-together. Kaffemik is held whenever there is something to celebrate. At a traditional Kaffemik friends and family and sometimes the whole village is invited to the home for food, cakes, and coffee. You will to some extent experience the same Greenlandic hospitality, as the host will welcome you into their home. You will learn about traditional, modern, and just daily life in a place like Ilulissat.

In the evening you will be taken out on a snowshoe hike to look for the northern lights. It is a magical experience to see the green light dance over the clear night sky. As the northern lights are a natural phenomenon it is of course not guaranteed that it will be visible this night. However, during the hike, you will see the beautiful landscape in a different way, then during the day - either with a clear black sky, full of stars, sometimes bathed in moonlight or overcast with snow quietly falling. For this tour, you need to dress in warm clothes, other gear that you will need will be provided.

Day 4 - Day off or optional day tour

Winter Adventure | Ilulissat | Disko Bay

Regarding today's activities, you have different options to choose from. Either you can have a day with time to explore Ilulissat on your own. If there still are some things you would like to see in town, you can go back downtown and spend some time walking around, doing the last souvenir shopping and enjoy a good lunch on one of the many restaurants or cafés and maybe write some postcards. For souvenir shopping, there are several places that sell beautiful, handmade things - figures carved from bone or clothing made from seal skin or musk ox wool, some of the warmest and softest wool, you will find. If you go down towards the harbour you will find the artisan workshop, if it is open you can go in and see how the artists make all these beautiful things.

If you would like a little more of an adrenaline kick, you can choose to go on a snowmobile ride. The route exact route is depending on the weather and snow conditions - if conditions allow it we will cross the frozen sea ice and go north from Ilulissat to the settlement Oqaatsut. Whatever route is chosen, one thing is for sure, you will see plenty of the breathtaking, frozen landscape. On the tour there will also be stops for enjoying the view, taking pictures and having a warm beverage.

For this tour, no previous experience is required and a warm polar suit will be provided. There need to at least two passengers signed up for this tour before it is confirmed. The tour will take around 3 hours.

If you would like to take things a little slower another option is to join on a 5 hours snowshoe hike. This tour goes along the Yellow route to the Icefjord. You will hike with an experienced guide, who will teach you how to move around with snowshoes and take you to the places that have the best views over the Icefjord with its huge icebergs. No previous experience is required.

If you would like to go on the snowmobile ride or snowshoe hike you can choose as an "extra" in the booking process for this 5 day tour.

In the evening you are invited for a dinner at Hotel Arctic. Enjoy your last night in Ilulissat, you might be lucky that the sky is clear and there is a chance of seeing the northern lights one last time before you leave tomorrow.
