Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Arriving in Uummannaq | Dinner with a local family

Winter trip to traditional Greenland | Uummannaq | North Greenland

Welcome to Uummannnaq. We greet you into our community in north Greenland and share our life with you.

We meet you at the heliport, and after settling into your guesthouse, stroll around town among the colorful houses in the snow. Boats are on land at the harbour - transportation in this season is by dogsleds. Many of the sled dogs are tethered on the sea ice in front of town, ready to go out. But don’t pet them, always ask the owner before you touch any dogs.

You will be enjoying dinner with a local family. Here you will enjoy conversations with the locals about life above the arctic circle! You will also receive a briefing about your winter wonder adventure! It will be an exciting experience of how we sustain our living from the Arctic nature.

Day 2 - Dogsledding to a remote settlement

Winter trip to traditional Greenland | Uummannaq | North Greenland

Today you will be dogsledding over the sea ice to visit a small and remote settlement. On the way, we may meet fishermen catching halibut under the ice, and perhaps see some seals in the distance resting on the ice. Icebergs change shape as we pass by them. You might see a reindeer, or a dragon, or a happy face, in the fascinating ice sculptures by nature. Just let your imagination fly - we locals enjoy them as much as you do. Let the arctic winds slip through your hair and lie your curiosity on the sea ice!

At the settlement of about 200 people, we will visit a friend, eat with them, share stories, and stay the night. Have fun with the children, visit the church, school and general store, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The crunch of snow is often the only sound you hear, as you take a walk. If we are lucky, northern lights might choose to entertain us. When the moon is out, it illuminates the icebergs in the fjord, creating a landscape of endless beauty!

Day 3 - Ice fishing | Catch you own dinner

Winter trip to traditional Greenland | Uummannaq | North Greenland

Let’s dogsled across the fjord to the fishing grounds! Halibut are caught deep down with long lines. We make a hole in the sea ice, set the lines down, and then we can have coffee and tea in a warm tent or hut, or go driving around the fiord in search of a nice iceberg. Master the art of longline fishing, and chat with the local fishermen!

We check the lines for our catch and head back to Uummannaq. The name of the town Uummannaq means ‘shaped like a heart’, and the distinct mountain is visible from far away. In early spring, colors of the sunset will paint the snow and sky. Or in April, we already have long days, with late night twilights melting into dawn.

Back home, your catch will become dinner for the day. Halibut of the north is tasty, having grown slowly in the cold, pristine environment. All local food in Greenland is organic, a small luxury that we have up here.

Day 4 - Short tour of town | Departure day

Winter trip to traditional Greenland | Uummannaq | North Greenland

Today you will be enjoying a tour of the town. The tour of the town will take you to the historical church, and turf huts beside the museum. After two days in the fiord, share your impressions with the guide, who will be happy to talk about what interests you about life in the Arctic. Many travellers are amazed at the balance between tradition and modern, to live so close to nature and also have access to technology.

After a beautiful helicopter flight over the fjord, and a short plane connection, you will be back in Ilulissat.
