Disko Island is an amazing place in Greenland. The Greenlandic name is "Qeqertarsuaq" which means the Big Island. It is 8.578 km² and is one of the 100 biggest islands in the world. It is about 100 kilometres from the mainland in the Disko bay.
If you are visiting the disko bay area it is a great opportunity to take the boat to this Island. You need at least two nights here to see the town and go on very beautiful hikes. It is also possible to go by dog sledge during the summer on top of the mountain, and ofcause during the winter too.
Greenland is named GREENland because "Eric the Red" the man who named the country came to the very lush South Greenland during the summer time. So its very green in the south and are more rocky and colder in the north. Greenland is 2600 kilometres long and 1000 kilometres wide, so there is a big difference in nature. So even though Qeqertarsuaq is further up north (69°45′N 53°30′W) but still it's very green and lush like the south, because its vulcanic created. Therefore is the beach very special too with its black sand.
The beach is very beautiful and nice for evening walks but still too cold to swim in :-)
When we were kids we used to play soccer/football in gravel fields, but today has some of the towns in Greenland got artificial lawns, and this football/soccer field has one of the world most beautiful views with the sea and icebergs as a background!
