Uummannaq is the heart of the world

The village of Uummannaq is named by its iconic heart-shaped mountain, and the legend goes that once you've visited you'll leave a piece of your heart here, always calling you to come back.

 

1. Discovering the Frozen fiord

Around February, when the ice has settled on the sea, the dog sledding season starts, car driving, snowmobile trips, ice fishing for halibut, catfish etc., skiing and of course northern lights. The ice stays until May.

2. Dogsledding on frozen ice 

When the ice has settled on the sea, the fishermen’s and hunters and even the locals of Uummannaq going on the ice and fishing for halibut, cod etc. with dogsled. There are around 700 dogs in Uummannaq 2019. Just few years ago there was more end 1500 dogs in Uummannaq, they are push away by snowmobiles.

3. The Dark time 

From the 8th of November to the middle of February, there is dark time where the sun does not come up all day, but our beautiful Christmas candles lightning the town up.

4. It is Santas Hometown

Santa Claus lives in his lovely, cozy house here in Uummannaq, where he also has his big and nice mailbox, where the whole world's children send their Christmas wish letters to him.

5. Original inuit culture, with a touch of the modern world

We now live in the modern world where we use modern equipment and vessels. In the old days you use equipment made of animal bones to catch whales or seals. But today we do the same way but just in the newer equipment. All people should see our equipment with a cultural way to catch our food.
