Information about Kaffemik

A Kaffemik is a traditional Greenlandic get-together that is held at every possible special occasion. Kaffemik is a true example of the warm Greenlandic hospitality.

The event can be held to celebrate a row of different happenings, at birthdays, holidays, christenings, confirmations, first day at school, graduation or whatever occasion that needs a little celebration.

However the event is not little in all cases, usually a lot of people attend, pretty much everyone the host knows, and in smaller villages it is not unusual that all fellow villagers stop by for a cup of coffee. A Kaffemik usually has a very loose structure and is held as an open house. Guests do not have to attend at a fixed time, but drop in when it suits them, stay for a little while to have something to eat, coffee and cakes. It is said that people only stay for the time it takes to drink two cups of coffee, then you leave to make space for more guests.

You will always find a lot of food at a 'Kaffemik'. The tables will be full of Greenlandic specialities, lots of different cakes and something good to drink.
