Information about Maniitsoq

On the mid-west coast, a small enclave is pioneered by the town Maniitsoq. Surrounded by snow covered mountains, white as sugar resting at their tins. With its surrounding archipelago Maniitsoq is the heaven of sea adventures and with its mountain the heaven of Heli skiing.

Maniitsoq Town

The town was established in 1755 and has a population of 2.800 inhabitants. Maniitsoq is translated as the uneven place, due to its mountains covering the landscape. Before establishing a town on the lands, it was used by inuits in the summer.

The area is  rich on rare earth metals, keeping uranium, platinum and gold, that can be found in the mountains close by. Gemstones such as diamonds, rubies and garnets, are in  small quantities found in Maniitsoq.

Maniitsoq is well known for its many optional activities, such as heli skiing, fishing, boat tours and snowmobiling.

Museum

The museum has an interesting exhibition of the history of Maniitsoq that goes back 4.000 years. Displaying archaeological finds from the time of Saqqaq people, the vikings as well as Thule folks. The actual building is combined by four colonial buildings stating back to 1840. The location of the these historic buildings used to be in the center of town, but was allocated to the north side of Maniitsoq, due to the fish fabric expansion.

Activities in Maniitsoq

In the summer time, the fish resides close to shores of Maniitsoq, with the humpback whales accompanying them. The chance of seeing a whale playing hide and seek between the waves,  is very likely and is a magnificent and unique sight for the eyes.

Sailing around the waters of Maniitsoq, is a memorable journey, that you will never forget. In the fresh breeze of the arctic winds, enjoy the color play between the calm water, in contrast to the dark mountains with white snow, and glaciers resting at their tins.

With its low temperatures, Maniitsoq has great conditions for outdoor-winter activities. Well known for its alpine mountains, and is highly adored among heli ski enthusiasts. Heli skiing action is promised when being transported by helicopter to the top of the surrounding mountaina, whilst skiing down the snow covered mountain side, enjoy the breathtaking view.

The relaxing pleasure of fishing, is an experience one should not miss, when visiting Greenland. Overlooking the many mosquitoes, the sensation of looking into the crystal blue water with a fish pulling on the other end of fishing pole, whilst the sun is at its highest, is worth the trip.
