Information about Nanortalik

A distinctive and original treasure is found in South Greenland, with a climate diverging itself, from the rest of the vegetated land, dominating the south. Breaking the nature heritage with its naked mountains, lies Nanortalik deep in its surrounding fjord system, on a small island.

Background of Nanortalik town


Nanortalik holds a population of  around 1350 inhabitants and 5 villages.

The neighbouring sea ice, houses every now and then polar bears. The majestic creatures uses the sea ice as hunting and playing ground. Due to the often visiting polar bears, the town was given the name Nanortalik, directly translated to  “The place with polar bears”.

In Town Adventures


The charming town, holds a white wooden church, with a core of history dating back to the colonial period. The church was established in the late colonial period, in 1916 and has since had an essential role, to the community, as choir singing is adored by all locals. When visiting Nanortalik search for the stone, that is naturally formed as the famous explorer Knud Rasmussen. It is a mystery how the stone, has come to be with its shape, but it is a mystery for every explorer to solve. Nanortalik Museum is a world of its own, as the buildings are old colonial cores,  contrasting the more modern architecture dominating the town. The houses tell a story of their own, as the modest living condition in the early 1900 are visible. The museum holds, traditional inuit clothing for tourist performances.

Every hikers dream, is to be found in the boondocks of Nanortalik, as a hikers paradise hides in the background of the beautiful town.

Tasermiut fjord


Nanortalik enchants every explorer, as it holds an unimaginable stunning landscape, offering numerous adventures. The town, is surrounded by one of the ten wonders of the arctic, Tasermiut Fjord. Tasermiut, is best to be explored by kayak, as it holds still waters, through a valley of sky high mountains, reflecting themselves in the still waters. The shores of Tasermiut fjord, is the perfect shelter, pathing way into the wild. Explore the highlands of the fjord, venturing towards summits, with unimaginable white snow resting at their tins. The sky high mountains are highly adored by mountain climbers. Conquering the vertical mountain sides, is just one of the countless opportunities the area can offer.

Explore more exotic lands, when venturing into the fjord. Tasermiut is famous for it herbology, despite being around Nanortalik with its naked mountains, Qinngua valley is to be found 40 kilometers outside of the town.  The forest is remote, and only inhabited by wild birdlife. It is unbelievably stunning, resembling a canvas with its colorful and vegetated herbs, dominating the bare lands.  On the island of Uunartoq, the famous hot springs in the south, are to be found. Uunartoq means “the warm place”, and was given the name due to its geothermal warmth. Sit in the hot springs with a glass of something sparkling , keeping you safe from the arctic cold with its warmth, while enjoying the breathtaking view of passing icebergs and majestic mountains. Nanortalik is the quintessence of adrenalin, waiting for you to explore.
