Information about Paamiut
Go on a journey back in time and get lost in the arctic beauty. A place that is sure to surprise and leave you breathless. A place of breathtaking landscapes which will take you far and beyond any other place in the world.
South west of Greenland you will find Paamiut, a town with 1.500 inhabitants making it the eighth biggest city in Greenland. It was established in 1742, but is said to have been inhabited long before that. The name means “Those who Reside by the Mouth” and was so named because of its location, at the mouth of Kuannersooq fjord.
Paamiut is known for its beautiful surroundings and the famous White Tailed Eagle, that breeds in the area. This magnificent bird has made its home and thrives in the region.
Reaching Paamiut is possible with flights from Nuuk which is available all year around or in summer, flights from Narsarsuaq. Also joining the Arctic Umiaq Ferry sailing on the west coast regularly.
The main occupation is partly hunting and fishing, also tourism plays a big role especially in the summer season.
Due to the golfstream the ocean surface does not freeze, but around autumn the east Greenlandic and west greenlandic current cross each other. Which brings along icebergs traveling along the west coast, which essentially means seal hunting season begins.
The Church was established in 1909 and is one of the oldest buildings in town. The beautiful church was drawn by Helge Bojsen-Møller and has been reconstructed since. Trees do not grow very tall in Greenland, which means the wood they used to build the church is driftwood. Imagine how much work was put in constructing this magnificent building.
Only a few people other places in Greenland know how to carve soapstone. Mainly the artists around the country carve in wood, bone and animal teeth. Paamiut is well known for the artists who among other things, are extremely talented to carve soapstone.
Paamiut is a place that will take you to a whole new world, with activities for explorer.
