History of The Area


Uummannaq is recognized as Greenland, most beautiful land as the area is surrounded by a 160 kilometer long fjord, with sky high mountains circumscribing the waters, with unbelievable white snow, resting at their tins.

Uummanaq is situated 460 kilometers north of the polar circle, by the foot of 1170 m. high heart shaped mountain, on the Nuussuaq peninsula.  Uummanaq is resided all year around, by its 1250 inhabitants and holds 7 small settlements scattered around its fjord. The town was founded in 1763, as the peninsula was often occupied by whalers and therefore seen reason to establish a town, on the picturesque arctic lands.

The remote town, is only accessible by helicopter from Qaarsut, for outside visitors. The remoteness of Uummanaq makes a memorable journey for every adventurer. Colorful houses are spread across the mesmerizing peninsula, dominating the surroundings all year around, creating a stunning picturesque landscape, that will enchant visitors to explore the multi colored town.

Uummannaq is vibrating of life, as the howls from dogs, laughter of children and the buzzing life breaks the silence, created from the gaunt lands.

History is found on every corner of the town, and to know the present of the town, the past must be known. Visit the museum, hike to the foot of the heart-shaped mountain and visit santa claus’ summer cottage. Be sure to pay a visit the world famous orphanage, the residents of the orphanage perform traditional singing and dancing with a modern twist. Uummanaq is famous for their loving locals, that welcome all foreign visitors with dancing and singing.

Due to the arctic climate, adventurous activities are offered all year around. In the winter, explore the lands either by dogsled, snowmobile or cross the ice by car, in inuit winter attire. With the purpose of visiting the small fishing and hunting settlements, explore ancient inuit culture by ice fishing, and understand how man and dog have sufficed each other for survival, in the arctic climate.
