Nuuk, Ilulissat and Disko Island package | West Greenland
Book this package if you want to experience 3 incredibly different towns in Greenland. You’ll start in the capital of Greenland, Nuuk. Go to the capital of Ice, Ilulissat and visit the beautiful Disko Island.
Nuuk is a modern city with a mix of traditional and modern ways of living. You’ll meet a modern Inuit society in the shape of artworks, gastronomy and of course the locals. Nearby Nuuk you’ll find the 2. Largest fjord system in the world and it is full of beautiful surroundings. There are many activities all year round with great possibilities to catch fish.
You can’t find roads between towns in Greenland, therefore most traffic is by boat, ship and by flight. A very popular way of getting around among the locals is the coastline ferry, Sarfaq Ittuk, which sails from South Greenland to Disko Bay in the north. You’ll have the opportunity to experience part of this journey along the coast of Greenland, from Nuuk to Ilulissat with the locals.
You can say that Ilulissat is the capital of the Disko Bay area, but more importantly, it is well known as the capital of ice. About 4.500 people live here, most make a living from fishing, that’s why it’s easy to find fresh local fish in the town and in the restaurants. In Greenlandic Ilulissat means “icebergs” and you’ll be quick to discover how well the name fits the place, as you’ll see enormous icebergs and calving glaciers!
When you walk through the city you’ll get to see the Arctic sleddogs which only live in the northern part of Greenland.
From Ilulissat is it possible to see the Disko Island Qeqertarsuaq. On the tour, you’ll also get to visit the fantastic and only city of Disko Island: Qeqertarsuaq, which is about a 100 km away from Ilulissat. Qeqertarsuaq is definitely an ideal place to go on hikes in the beautiful and unique terrain. You can go dogsledding here all year round, yes even in the summer. UNESCO World Heritage Site
When you’re arrived to the capital and have checked in to your hotel there will be time to go on a city tour. If it’s a late arrival there is for it the next morning. For dinner go to one of the many wonderful restaurants in the heart of Nuuk.
You’ll start the day with a city-tour by bus or car for about an hour and a half, where you’ll get to know Nuuk. The tour stops by the National Museum where you can learn about the impressive history of the Greenlandic culture. We’ll walk straight from the colonial harbor to the northern lights inspired Cultural House where you’ll get to taste delicious Greenlandic tapas. After lunch you’ll visit a local family for coffee and cake, and listen to stories about Greenland from the present and the past. At 3 PM you’ll go on a tour by boat! You’re going on a fishing tour and will be able to give the catch to a summer restaurant, where it will be prepared to a delicious dish among beautiful mountains.
Today you’ll sail to the icefjord which is in the bottom of the Nuuk fjord (Nuup Kangerlua). Depending on the conditions of ice the tour there should take about 2,5 hours to the Narsap Sermia glacier, and when you can see the glacier the captain will stop the engine so you can enjoy your lunch with the only sounds being the dripping and cracking of ice around you. After lunch you’ll go to an abandoned village, which is a popular summer residence among the locals. You’ll get to hear the impressive story behind the former fishing and hunting village. On the way back to Nuuk you’ll see a waterfall on the iconic mountain, Sermitsiaq. When you’ve arrived to Nuuk at 15:00 PM there will be time to buy some last minute souvenirs. You’ll board on the coastal ferry, Sarfaq Ittuk, at 20:00 PM.
You’ll spend the whole day on the coastal ferry, there will be 5 stops on the way where you can go on small hikes. If you measure the route directly from Nuuk to Ilulissat there is about 560 km. During the tour you can get lucky and spot wales, seals and seabirds.
When you’ve arrived in Ilulissat at 13.00 PM and checked into your hotel, you’ll have the whole afternoon to go around and explore the town. You could go visit the museum of the famous polar explorer Knud Rasmussen. At 22:00 PM you’ll go on a 2,5 hours tour by boat to the icefjord and sail among huge icebergs in the midnight sun!
Today you’ll see a huge glacier wall which you’ll come close enough to see and hear calve off icebergs. It is one of the most active glaciers in the world and the icebergs it calves off are impressive! While you wait for it to calve again (and again!) your lunch will be served.
On the way back to Ilulissat you’ll sail past a bird mountain that is full of life, a waterfall, the Paakitsoq fjord and the village Oqaatsut.
Now that you’ve seen icebergs from a boat it’s time to fly above them! You’ll get to see the largest glacier from the air and land nearby it. You’ll have half an hour to enjoy the view and on the way back to the airport you’ll see beautiful icebergs over the icefjord and you might be so lucky that you spot whales!
Today you’ll go to the town Qeqertarsuaq. It is the one and only town on Disko Island. Here there are a lot of opportunities to go on hikes around the island and it is actually the only place in Greenland that can offer you to go dogsledding all year round, yeah even in the summer!
If you want to go dogsledding you’ll have to hike to the top of Uunartorsuup Sermia which is 900 meters above sea level and depending on your physical condition it’ll take 2-4 hours. It is a hard hike and not doable for everyone. You can choose other activities like hiking to a waterfall or to an area of amazing basaltic rock formations. these tours are not included in the package. Send us a message and we can arrange something for you.
Today there is nothing on the programme, so use the day to relax or go for a walk to UNESCO’s Sermermiut area where you can walk on a fine wooden path with a view straight to the icefjord, a fantastic walk!
