If you are looking for a flexible winter visit to North Greenland, join us for this 4-day tour to Ilulissat and its famous Icefjord.

Included are flights from Iceland, accommodation in Greenland, and a 5-hour dogsled adventure. The remainder of the time in the capital of icebergs is yours to arrange as you wish. Explore the town and its cultural attractions, hike out to the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Ilulissat Icefjord, or book additional day tours where you can sail amongst the enormous icebergs (if ice conditions allow), snowshoe, visit a local family for a typical “Kaffemik”, snowmobile, and chase Northern Lights - just to name just a few of the options available to you.

Good to know:

If traveling alone, you must choose the single room supplement when booking this tour.

Depending on the availability of flights to Greenland, a flight supplement may apply.

Trips to Greenland are always subject to weather conditions. Delays and flight cancellations can happen. We therefore strongly recommend that you do not book onward international flights directly after your trip to Greenland. Give yourself at least one extra day to make an international connection. We also recommend purchasing travel insurance that will cover any expenses should your flights be delayed or cancelled due to bad weather.

The airlines that fly to Greenland only allow 20 kg of checked-in baggage. If you go over this limit, there is a fee (often strictly enforced) for the extra weight.

It is important to bring cash in the form of Danish Krona to Greenland. While credit cards are accepted in larger locations (eg hotels, supermarkets), they may not be accepted elsewhere. Foreign currency is often not accepted.

There is a 3-hour time difference between Iceland and West Greenland in the winter and a 2-hour time difference in the summer.

While it is not guaranteed that the dogsled driver will speak English or Danish, they are well-practiced with guiding visitors safely on this excursion and we encourage you to communicate with body and sign language.

Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival and free time

Choose your own Winter Adventure | Ilulissat | 4 Days

Your 4-day experience begins at the Domestic Airport in downtown Reykajvik. Try to score a window seat for some of the best views you will ever see from a plane (weather cooperating), as you wing all the way across the great Greenland Icesheet to land in Ilulissat ~3 hours later.

There you will be met and transported to your hotel to settle in. You will have the rest of the day to relax or head out on your own to explore the city. We recommend booking a City Walk as a great introduction to Ilulissat, or check out the other day-tour options here on Guide to Greenland. Don’t forget that your exploration of Ilulissat doesn’t have to finish with the setting Sun. Book for a Northern Lights tour in the evening to ensure you get the best view of one of nature’s most spectacular light shows (weather and solar activity cooperating).

We recommend that you read our Ultimate Guide to Ilulissat for a complete look at all there is to see and do in the city.

Optional tours in the evening

Go out in the evening and enjoy the stars. The snow makes the landscape surprisingly light. With luck, in February and March, the northern lights may appear. To join an optional tour, book it in the box on the right side.

Chasing the Northern Lights

We drive to the outskirts of towns to look out for northern lights. Your guide will give you tips on how to capture the scene on your camera. 2 hours, min. participants 4.

Snowshoe in the Northern Night

A short hike on snowshoes will take you to a hut just outside town, with a view over icebergs under the starry sky. 2 hours, min. participants 2.

Inuit myths & legends

A cozy evening of storytelling, wrapped up in warm furs in a tipi just outside town. Greenlandic snacks and the Greenland coffee will be served. 3 hours, min. participants 4.

Day 2 - Dogsled excursion to Nalluarsuk (5 hrs)

Choose your own Winter Adventure | Ilulissat | 4 Days

Today you will experience one of the traditional (and still used) methods of transportation in Greenland - the dog sledge.

It is important to remember that Greenlandic sled dogs are working dogs and should never be approached on your own (even in town). Your dog sled driver (musher) will introduce you to the dogs and indicate which ones are safe to pet. They will also provide instruction on how to sit on the sledge and what to do and look out for while sledding.

Once the team is hitched, you will head out into the stunning back-country around Ilulissat with the destination of Nalluarsuk - a small fjord next to the Ilulissat Icefjord. From this viewpoint, the sight of the massive icebergs, frozen in place, is simply stunning! Your return to Ilulissat will be partly over the sea-ice (ice conditions permitting). It is a different experience to dogsled over land vs over the frozen sea, and weaving between the icebergs behind a pack of dogs is something you will never forget!

Please note: dogsledding is a cold experience and we encourage you to rent appropriate jacket, trousers and boots for this excursion. It is also quite a physical activity, so please make sure you have no injuries and do not suffer from excessive back or or other pain.

Day 3 - Exploring on your own

Choose your own Winter Adventure | Ilulissat | 4 Days

As this is a flexible 4-day tour to Ilulissat, Day 3 is reserved for you to use as you wish.

Have a look at all the options available in the Ultimate Guide to Ilulissat, or book your day tour here on Guide to Greenland. If ice conditions are appropriate, one recommendation is to sail amongst the enormous icebergs in Disko Bay. A more active option is to book a snowshoeing or snowmobiling excursion around Ilulissat. And as always - don’t forget the possibility of seeing the amazing Northern Lights once it gets dark! Book a tour to ensure you have the best views from the darkest places around Ilulissat.

Day 4 - Return to Iceland

Choose your own Winter Adventure | Ilulissat | 4 Days

There are a few hours this morning for you to take one last look around the city and perhaps buy some souvenirs at one of the stores in town. At a pre-arranged time, you will be transferred from the Hotel to the airport for your flight back to Iceland.

Although it is goodbye for now, we hope to see you back in Greenland in the near future!
