Take a boat ride to the abandoned settlement of Assaqutaq. We’ll sail past a dog island where sledge dogs roam free during the summers, and into the fjord where humpbacks and fin whales can often be seen.

Assaqutaq was closed down in the 70’s but still keeps its charm, and is often visited by locals over the summer. Located on the southern side of the Nasaasaq mountain you’ll have an ocean view the whole hike back.

Before heading your way back home, take your time to explore the old buildings and get a feel of what life was like during simpler times.

The area is abundant in wildlife and flora, you can find schools of capelin and ptarmigans hiding in the small valleys where the national flower blooms in bright pink and even in white colours.

As the village is located on a small island, you have to cross a small hanger bridge to get back to the mainland and beware of the tide as the last few meters between the mainland and the island are below water at high tide.

The hike will take you past an old burial site, please be careful not to disturb the site and accidentally move the rocks.

Here lie the former inhabitants of the settlement, buried in rock piles to protect them from animals, and with a traditional ocean view. The deep ocean was believed to be where heaven was because of its abundance of prey whereas the idea of heaven in the sky was ridiculous.

The hike goes up and down the mountainside, so be prepared to go up and down a few large boulders, which just adds to the fun. If this sounds like just the tour for you then go ahead and book your transfer today! Just click on ‘Choose a date’ above and find a day that suits you.
