This tour is an exciting adventure through the wilderness of Greenland, and with the harsh conditions of winter it is not for the faint of heart. This experience is a true expedition type, and what you'll get out of it, is well worth the money and effort. You will be traveling cross-country over the ice and mountains, with skilled and knowledgeable guides who will teach you what to do while traveling with dog sled. You will get to know the Greenlandic dogs and understand how strong and useful they are as you test your limits, spending nights in remote hunting cabins and in tents.
This experience will completely change your mind of how man and animal can work harmoniously together through the harsh environment. You will quickly become an important member of the team, helping out with food preparation, dog feeding and packing down the camp to fit on the sled. This trip is a challenge and is therefore not recommended for anyone with health issues or a bad back. During this trip you will go into unpredictable snow conditions, ascending and descending hills and mountains far below freezing temperatures. It is obligatory to rent adequate polar clothing and boots unless you have your own, which in our experience is rare, the staff will determine whether or not yours are suitable to ensure your comfort and safety.
The tour is normally from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut, but if you'd prefer to start from Sisimiut then please contact us.
You arrive down by the ice where the guide and dogs will be waiting for you. Here they will give you instructions and basic information, and they will inspect your clothing. If they decide your clothes will be too cold, it is mandatory to rent fur clothing and proper boots. When briefing is over, you are ready to get on the sled and head out on the snow-covered landscape.
The incredible scenery will leave you breathless, with only the sounds from the sled sliding over the snow-covered ground and ice. Hear the dogs panting and the driver making sounds to navigate them in the right direction. Chances of seeing wildlife are very likely and they are majestic in their own way. You get to understand the vast and demanding environment Greenland is and gain a bigger knowledge of what the Greenlanders had to endure when trying to survive.
Along the way, you will together choose a spot where you will eat lunch, while enjoying the quietness, before taking the last trip to where you will be spending the night. When arriving at the stop for the day, you will help prepare dinner and feed the dogs. Then getting ready to head into your sleeping bag to get your well-deserved rest.
Today is a new day for another great adventure of demanding yet wonderful new experiences. After eating breakfast and slowly waking up with morning coffee, overviewing the sun rising on the sky and over the mountains and ice covered ocean. After a while you together will help to pack the sled and head on the journey.
The terrain will be more hilly and chances of going to the ice and frozen lakes, while you can take pictures and see how vast and deserted it is. Despite the spectacular sites this day will be the day you will do most of the traveling. So if you feel you are getting chilly, running beside the sled is an option.
When you feel you are getting hungry, there will be a break to get lunch and relax. Thereafter the journey continues, towards the hut where you will spend you night. By arrival you will help setting camp for the night and when that is done, you will feed the dogs and arrange dinner. When the sun has gone down, and it is cloud free, chances of low temperatures are big. But this is also a great chance for you to see the northern lights above you. Being out in the wilderness, northern lights will be an amazing show of mesmerizing colors moving across the sky.
Once storytelling and other activities it's time to crawl into you warm sleeping bag and get a good night sleep.
Waking up and realizing this is your last day and then packing up and getting ready to go on the last dog sled ride, take in all which the surroundings have to offer and enjoy it to the fullest.
Arriving in Sisimiut it's time to say goodbye to the dogs and your guide. You have completed the trip and are ready to head on your way.
This is a three day long trip, therefore it is very important that you know before you take the trip, that you need to be in good physical condition. If you have back problems or other injuries, this trip is not a wise decision.
