A 'Kaffemik' is a traditional get together that is held at any special occasion in Greenland. Usually people invite family, friends and in smaller places the whole village joins. The structure of a 'Kaffemik' very loose, the guests do not have to attend at a fixed time, but come when it suits them, stay for a little while to have coffee and cake and then leave. You will always find a lot of food at a 'Kaffemik'. The tables will be full of Greenlandic specialities, lots of different cakes and something good to drink.
On this trip you get to visit one of the local families that have lived in Ilimanaq for a long time. They will introduce you to the local way of life with all its cultural traditions. They will tell you stories from the old days and what it is like living in a place like this today in the ever more modern and globalized world. Background of Ilulissat City
Ilulissat is the 3rd largest city in Greenland, attuning both traditional- and modern culture.

A Kaffemik is a traditional Greenlandic get-together that is held at every possible special occasion. Kaffemik is a true example of the warm Greenlandic hospitality.
The event can be held to celebrate a row of different happenings, at birthdays, holidays, christenings, confirmations, first day at school, graduation or whatever occasion that needs a little celebration.
However the event is not little in all cases, usually a lot of people attend, pretty much everyone the host knows, and in smaller villages it is not unusual that all fellow villagers stop by for a cup of coffee. A Kaffemik usually has a very loose structure and is held as an open house. Guests do not have to attend at a fixed time, but drop in when it suits them, stay for a little while to have something to eat, coffee and cakes. It is said that people only stay for the time it takes to drink two cups of coffee, then you leave to make space for more guests.
