4 Day Highlights of Winter | Ilulissat | Disko Bay

Your flight departs from Reykjavik Domestic Aiport. Try to get a window seat, as you will fly above the Greenland Ice Sheet ~ 3-hour flight to Ilulissat and the views are incredible if the sky is free from clouds!

You will be met at Ilulissat airport and transferred to the 4-star Hotel Arctic with its wonderful views of icebergs floating in Disko Bay. Once you have had time to settle in, your guide will take you for a city walk - introducing you to the history and culture of the region and pointing out useful and interesting places that you might like to visit during your free time in the city.

During the evening, the group will enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel.

We also recommend that you to head outside once it is dark for the chance to see the spectacular Northern Lights (weather and solar activity permitting). Booking a Northern Lights tour will allow you to head to the darkest locations around Ilulissat for the very best views of this magical spectacle.

Today we will travel as the Inuit do - by dog sled.

After breakfast and having rugged up in your warmest clothing, you will be transferred to the outskirts of Ilulissat where you will meet your dogsled driver (musher) and the dogs. It is important to remember that Greenlandic Sled Dogs are working dogs and you should not approach them on your own. Your musher will let you know which dogs are safe to pet and guide your introduction to them.

Once the dogs are ready and after some instruction on riding a dog sled, you will head out into the back-country of Ilulissat on a journey to explore the arctic tundra. Listen to the commands given by the musher to the dogs and feel the reaction of the team. There is a special bond between them that allows them to overcome any obstacles they may meet on the frozen landscape together.

Please note: if you have any injuries or excessive aches and pains, please talk to your guide before going on the dogsled tour. While the journey is an incredible experience, it is not the most comfortable mode of transportation and you should make sure that you will be able to manage it.

The UNESCO World Heritage Listed Ilulissat Icefjord is a must for any visitor to Greenland. We will go sailing between the enormous icebergs for which the city is named (In Greenlandic “Ilulissat” means “Icebergs”). It is humbling and almost beyond comprehension to look up at them from the waterline, remember that we only see the top 10% of these incredible ice sculptures.

We will also join a “Kaffemik” - a traditional Greenlandic get-together - for further insight into Greenlandic culture. This is a great opportunity to sample some Greenlandic food and chat with a local about life north of the Arctic Circle.

The rest of the day is yours to explore Ilulissat as you wish.

We will finish the day with a farewell dinner for the group Hotel Arctic. Once again, there is the opportunity to book a tour and head outside to see if the Aurora Borealis are dancing for us.

The morning of your final day in Greenland is reserved for a guided hike out to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Ilulissat. The hike is not long. Nor is it very difficult. But the reward as you look down upon the millions of icebergs frozen in place in the Ilulissat Icefjord is beyond description.

Your guide will make sure you return to the hotel in time to collect your luggage before driving you to the airport for your journey back to Iceland.
