Ittoqqortoormiit Town


Ittoqqortoormiit - a small town with a long name, on the east coast of Greenland with a population just below 500 people. The town was founded in 1925 by Ejnar Mikkelsen, families from the west coast and Tasiilaq. The name is translated to “The big houses”.

The town of Ittoqqortoormiit is one of the most remote places in Greenland and only reachable by plane to Nerlerit Inaat, 40 kilometers from Ittoqqortoormiit. The only entrance to town, is by helicopter, snowmobile in winter and boat in summer.

The town mainly lives of hunting and tourism, therefore thriving wildlife plays a big role, in the daily life of the inhabitants.

National Park


The National Park is situated north of Ittoqqortoormiit and is covering an area of 972.000 square kilometers, making it the world’s biggest National Park. In the park lies four small settlements with a total of 35 inhabitants. A mesmerizing, unspoiled and remote place, rich with wildlife and breathtaking sceneries.

Museum


The local museum is situated in the center of town, and was in the late 1920’s an old whalers settlement, which later became a convenience store and administration stronghold. Today it consist of beautiful interior with paintings, photographs and east greenlandic costumes.

Uunartoq hot spring


Close to Ittoqqortoormiit lies Cape Tobin, in its mother tongue Uunartoq, which means “That which one burns oneself on”. The name was given because it is the warmest hot spring in Greenland, with degrees of 62 Celsius. It is so hot that if one might want to jump in, people usually use snow to cool it down first.

Scoresby Sund


Scoresby Sund is the world’s longest fjord reaching up to 350 kilometers and is named after the English Whaler William Scoresby, the first man to map this part of Greenland. It is a marvelous place to see the steep mountains, getting a glimpse of the many different arctic wildlife on land, in the air and in the waters. The great ice sculptures broken off from the multiple glaciers in the area is guaranteed.

The perfect adventure for those who want the absolute arctic experience, with an unique insight of the greenlandic living conditions.
