History & Background

Narsarsuaq is one of the few international airports in Greenland, with its 120 inhabitants. Because of the international airport the place is buzzing with life in the summer time. Throughout the year, many foreign visitors pass by enroute to one of the many South Greenlandic destinations. The international airport is the former US airbase Bluie West 1, and today you will find remains of the americans scattered along Narsarsuaq.

Narsarsuaq means ‘’The big plain’’ and is located at the bottom of Erik the Reds Fjord, on a huge flat plain made by glacier moraines and meltwater from the Icecap. Historically Narsarsuaq has only existed since 1941.
