Nuuk is populated by approximately 17500 inhabitants and was established in 1728, by the Norwegian missionary Hans Egede. The northernmost capital in the world. Expanding in all directions, mixing Greenlandic traditional- and modern culture, Nuuk the capital of Greenland is growing faster than ever and offers every opportunity for the nature- and culture loving guest.
History and background
The capital was founded in 1728 by the Norwegian missionary Hans Egede, and has today of more than 17,000 inhabitants. The center of Greenland lies at the mouth of its very own fjord system, on the mid-west coast of Greenland. The fjord system, is the second largest fjord system in the world, therefore offering piles of adventures all year around, originating from the capital.
Inspiration is to be found in all of Nuuk, as divergence and contrast dominates the town.
Nuuk is titled Colorful Nuuk, as the capital holds colourful houses and modern buildings, from start to end of the six kilometer long town. The colourful buildings are a trademark for the town, as they stand to contrast the environment of rock or white winter snow, creating a spectacular picturesque canvas for the eyes. The town’s infrastructure giving the full vision of the old and new perfectly collaborating.

The metropolitan town coincides with the nature that surrounds it. No matter where situated in the smallest capital of the world, there is easy access to the nature. The nature around Nuuk is dominated by rough and rocky landscape. Look to the north and you will see the iconic snow covered mountaintop of Sermitsiaq island from almost everywhere in town. If you look to the west you will see the mountain of Store Malene and just next to it the little sister Lille Malene, in their mother tounge Ukkusissat and Quassussuaq. Looking to the east you will see the smoother landscape of the Nordland, which is guarding Nuuk from the North Atlantic Ocean.
Hikes & Tours
Hiking around Store Malene and Lille Malene, are popular activities for the locals. Hiking to the top of Store Malene is a popular activity in summer and now ice-climbing tours are also available in wintertime. Lille Malene and its surrounding valleys make up a great recreational area for locals both in winter and summer. There different marked trails leading to the top and to some lovely lakes in the summer. In winter children and adults have fun around the two ski lifts on the mountainside.

Day 1 - Arrival day
You depart with the evening flight from Reykjavik and set out on 2 hour journey to Nuuk. Flying over Greenland, is every trip worth in itself, as flying over the Greenland icecap is the most scenic and beautiful journey imaginable.
Upon arrival in Nuuk, you and your fellow explorers will be transferred to your hotel for a 3 night stay. But the adventure of the day – does not end here. When you have settled in, an educated guide will be waiting for you at Greenland National Museum & Archive for a 3 hour guided city walk. You will learn about the past and the present of the daily life in Nuuk and learn about Greenland's diverse and fascinating culture. After visiting the National Museum, you will venture to the Parliament and City Council where you will discover how the daily life is shaped by the political decisions made here.
When tour is done, it is up to you what you would like to explore. Visit the city center and dine at a restaurant serving Greenlandic commodities.
Day 2 - Icefjord Expedition
Today you will venture deep into the veins of Nuuk fjord on open boat, with the mission of reaching the bottom of Nuup Kangerlua. The bottom of Nuup Kangerlua hides an arctic treasure – the majestic glacier Narsap Sermia. Narsap Sermia is surrounded by massive blue and white nuanced ice azures, that will take your breath away.
You will be travelling under the arctic sky in passages circumscribed by sky high mountains tins, accompanied by humpback whales playing hide and seek between the waves.
Near the Narsap Sermia glacier, you will go a shore and hike for 45 minutes on a rather flat arctic tundra. This is not a strenuous hike and is taken at a slow and easy pace. The oldest person who did this hike in 2012 was 73 years old, so put your mind at ease that you won’t be scaling sheer cliff faces! You will be rewarded by a fantastic view over the ice fiord of Nuuk. Within the fiord you will be able to view the amazing ice floes as far as the eye can see. The view is spectacular, with the white colour against the turquoise sea creating a visual memory you will never forget.
When you have completed your hike, the tour goes to Kapisillit. Kapisillit is a hunting and fishing village, that was established by 2 brothers in the start of the 1900. Since the settlement has endured prosperity and adversity. Here you will spend an hour at a local Greenlandic family and be attending the cultural celebration – Kaffemik. Coffe and home backed cakes are offered at the local home.
You return the same way you came, as the West Greenlandic nature never stops to impress.
Day 3 - Unforgettable dining experience
Today you will depart from Nuuk harbor at 5 PM for an extra ordinary dining experience, deep within the veins of Nuuk fjord.
As you venture into the fjord, you will be provided with marvelous nature, sky high mountain tins and traveling humpback whales.
Perhaps a whale will raise its tail like a friendly greeting or a cheeky seal will survey you curiously from the water or whilst it lounges on the shore.
After an hour of sailing the neighboring seas of Nuuk, you will arrive in Qooqqut Bay. Here you will fish for trout and acadian redfish, in front of a stunning waterfall, with pebbles flying in all directions. Once you and your fellow explorers are done with fishing, you will go a shore the abandoned settlement, that will host you for an evening feast. However, before the fish is delivered to the chef you will need to chop it up in preparation for use. Our guide will show you how to do this and you can take pride in the fact that not only are you eating your own catch but you have learned a valuable preparation skill in the process.
Before your evening feast, take the time to hike the steep mountain sides, explore the norse ruins or pick clams in the orange rays of the arctic midnight sun.
At 20:30 the boat will depart back to Nuuk, with an expected arrival time of 21:30
Day 4 - Free day and departure

When the evening arrives you and your fellow explorers will be transferred to Nuuk airport and check in for your flight to Iceland, departing at 21:15. Your flight will arrive in Reykjavik domestic airport at 03:35.
