Day 1
Welcome to Greenland
Get ready for a day of traveling. We fly with Air Greenland from Copenhagen to Ilulissat to start of your 8-day adventure.
Next, you will be transferred from the airport and check in at Hotel Arctic, with the most beautiful views of Disko Bay.
SERMERMIUT WALK
Prepare yourself for some amazing views. Your fifth day in Greenland brings you to Sermermiut Valley on a fully guided tour. Listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, the valley offers both natural and cultural attractions for you to enjoy. You will be exploring the remaining ruins of former Inuit settlements and see the Icefjord from a new perspective.
From Ilulissat, you will be transported to a wooden boardwalk outside of Ilulissat, which will lead you to the Sermermiut Settlement and a viewpoint by Nakkaavik, that overlooks the Icefjord.
While walking to the main attractions, your knowledgeable guide will tell you about the valley’s history and the flora and fauna we come across.
The Sermermiut settlement has been occupied by different migrations of Inuit, dating 4000 years back. After having explored the settlement, the tour continues towards the Icefjord, which can be seen from the ruins. We hike up to the viewpoint for a panoramic view of Ilulissat Icefjord.
In the evening, a lovely welcome dinner is served in the hotel restaurant (drinks not included).
Day 2
Exploring capital of Icebergs
CITY TOUR IN ILULISSAT
We will start our morning with a historical town tour of Ilulissat. Ilulissat means ‘iceberg’ in Greenlandic, and there is no doubt about where the city inherited its name from. You will get familiar with Ilulissat and its historical and cultural attractions, including the polar explorer Knud Rasmussen’s birthplace, the local fish market ‘Brættet’ and Zion’s church.. Ilulissat was founded as a trading post in 1741, and today, it is Greenland’s third-largest town, with over 4,500 inhabitants. You will learn even more following your guide in Ilulissat.
BOAT TOUR AMONG THE ICEBERGS:
Second night in Greenland brings you to Ilulissat Icefjord under the midnight sun. We will join a boat tour in the late evening. From May to July, you can experience the natural phenomenon, the midnight sun. In the rays of the midnight sun, the blue and white nuanced scenery of icebergs transforms into an orange and red-coloured Icefjord. The sun illuminating the icebergs with its orange colours is a phenomenal colour play that needs to be experienced.
Day 3
The Calving Glacier Eqi
By boat, you depart for your 3rd-day tour in Greenland. Today you will be heading north of Ilulissat to experience the calving glacier Eqi. The glacier is located by the sea, providing you with the perfect opportunity to see a glacier wall.
Upon arrival, the boat anchors by the glacier, where you will be enjoying your lunch while overlooking the 3.4-kilometre-long glacier wall. An extraordinary sight in itself, but even more marvellous is seeing the glacier calve ice.
After lunch, you will be dropped off to Eqi Glacier Lodge, where you will stay for the next few days. The lodge overlooks the Eqi Glacier – the most calving glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. Scientists estimate that the glacier calves an average of once every 10 minutes during the summer.
We advice to pack smaller bag/backpack for 2 nights; you can leave your other luggage in the hotel.
1st night at Calving Eqi Glacier Lodge
Day 4
Glacier Eqi Lodge stay
You will be staying at COMFORT EQI LODGE
These cabins are located at the top of the mountain and close to Café Victor. The cabin is equipped with its own toilet and shower, Green electricity from our own solar cells and heating. Please note it is a no-connection zone; it is not possible to have cell service or wifi in Eqi Lodge. It is time to go offline and experience true holidays and a raw Greenland experience!
Because you are staying 2 nights in Eqi Lodge, you will have the opportunity to join more hikes! Local guides can advise whether to hike the Greenland Ice Sheet, hike to Delta, or just enjoy your time watching the glacier. There is also the possibility to go to the sauna. You can purchase additional tours at Eqi Lodge!
2nd night at Calving Eqi Glacier Lodge.
Day 5
Hike to the Ice Sheet and Return to Ilulissat
After breakfast, it is time to leave the cabins and begin the final hike in the spectacular Greenland wilderness.
Hike to the Moraine at the Greenland Ice Sheet
The hike starts near the small lagoon at the southern end of the glacier.
From the lagoon, we continue towards the moraine, where the Greenland Ice Sheet reveals its dramatic scale. Here, deep crevasses and impressive formations in the glacier can be seen just a short distance away. The viewpoint also offers a wide view of the glacier front and the surrounding Arctic landscape.
This final hike is a chance to experience the raw beauty of Greenland up close before returning to Ilulissat. The hike to the glacier moraine is approximately 12 km long. The route runs through mountain terrain and takes about 4 hours. Most of the terrain is flat, but the final ascent to the moraine can be challenging. We bring lunch and drinks along for the trip.
Scenic Boat Trip Back to Ilulissat
At approximately 2:15 pm, we board the boat for the return journey to Ilulissat. The route follows the same spectacular waters travelled on the way to the camp, with time to enjoy the scenery from the sea.
Coffee, tea, and cake are served on board as we make our way back towards Ilulissat. We will check back into Hotel Arctic. Sailing to and from the glacier, you will be venturing through the wide bay of Brede Bugt, the fjord system Pakitsoq and Ataa Sound. Along the way, you can enjoy pristine views of fjord landscapes with mountains, waterfalls and marine animals, such as whales and seals.
Day 6
Free day in Ilulissat
Discover Ilulissat on your own. The town is full of both cultural and natural attractions.
Visit the newly established Icefjord Centre for a scientific insight into Ilulissat Icefjord, glaciers and icebergs. The centre is beautifully situated in Sermermiut Valley and is an elongation of the wooden boardwalk that you visited a couple of days earlier. The building in itself is an attraction, as its beautiful design is inspired by the wingspan of a flying snow owl.
You can also book extra excursions for this day, like a helicopter flight above the icefjord or an evening kayaking tour.
Day 7
Whale Safari in Ilulissat
Jump on the boat with us and enjoy views of Disko Bay on a whale safari. Disko Bay’s cold and krill-rich sea creates ideal conditions for different species of whales, which is why Disko Bay also is known as the capital of whales. In Disko Bay, we often meet humpback whales, minke whales and fin whales.
Day 8
Returning to Copenhagen, Denmark
Your eighth day brings you on a flight back to Copenhagen, Denmark.
As the flight offers one last glimpse of the Ice Fjord and its mesmerizing icebergs, you will journey back to Copenhagen, where you will arrive in the evening.
We are confident that you will return home with a suitcase full of memories that will outlast any other holiday you have experienced — at least, that is what our previous travelers have told us!
