Nature Adventure | South Greenland

The first day of your holiday will start off with a flight from either Reykjavik or Copenhagen. You'll be flying to Narsarsuaq in South Greenland. Narsarsuaq is a popular town due to its unusually beautiful nature. Narsarsuaq takes you close to The Inland Ice as it's only 9 km away from this town.

You'll be transferred straight to the hotel where you'll be checking in - and shortly after you're invited to an information meeting.

Already on your first day, you will get the feels of Greenland as you can hike to the Glacier View Point, which is only one hour from the hotel. It has great views of the Tunulliarfik Fjord icebergs and the Kiattuut Glacier.

Wake up for the first time on Greenland soil. You'll be transfered by boat from Narsarsuaq to Qassiarsuk. On a guided tour you'll walk through the village that holds 50 inhabitants. What's better than taking a step away from tourism?

The tour will take you to the Viking ruins of Brattahlid, learning the history of the arrival of Eric the Red from Iceland at this small settlement in 985. Of particular interest are the reconstructions of a Viking house (spacious but cold) and an inuit dwelling (small but warmer), transporting us back in time to the harsh conditions in which these people lived and it definitely shows us how the Inuit knew how to adapt better to the progressive cooling of the climate.

We will also take a 4x4 trip to the beautiful Tasiusaq farm where you can book an optional kayaking excursion of 1 hr through the icebergs if you would like.

Day 3 will take you to a new town in Southern Greenland. Today you'll be transfered from Narsarsuaq to Qaqortoq through the fjords and among countless of Icebergs. To be in the middle of this incredibly fine nature, on sea, is a must-do while visiting Greenland. An Iceberg is minimum 5 meters high - but many are the double height. While spotting all the Icebergs remember that you can only see the top 10%. 90% of an Iceberg is hidden under water.

When arriving in Qaqortoq you'll go on another guided tour through this new town. Qaqortoq is the capital of South Greenland. It was founded in 1775 and today 3000 people lives here. If I should describe the town with only two words it would be: charming and real/authentic. Many says it's the most charming town in all of Greenland.

The 4th day you'll get time on your own to do whatever you prefer doing. You can go for a stroll around the city, while enjoying the beauty of Qaqortoq's colourful buildings and nearby landscapes. Explore on your own the museum, the fur shops, the traditional kayak club, the church or the only fountain in all of Greenland.

You can also book an optional excursion to Hvalsey Church. This is the best-preserved of the churches in Greenland from that period, as it was built in the 14th century. People are gathered here from near and far to attend Christian festivals throughout the year. The fells and the fjord, which surrounds the church, has not changed a single bit over the centuries.

In the afternoon, you will take a zodiac boat transfer to the third most populated town in southern Greenland - Narsaq.

Next stop will be the greenlandic nature. In the morning we will set off towards Qaleraliq camp. The camp is right next to the Polar Ice Cap which will give you incredible views. The tent camp is based on a sandy beach and with a view to three glacier tongues.

After a little rest we will start walking our way through the glacier fronts. We'll be walking right next to massively tall ice walls and icebergs. And now the 10 km trekking will start. It's an impressive trek using crampons on the ice cap, exploring its crevasses, drains, caves, and seracs. An expert mountain guide will follow along to ensure the safety during the trek. He will also share his knowledge with us and learn us a lot about the things we'll be passing. Depending on weather conditions, we'll either be eating picnic lunch in the nature or back at the camp.

A zodiac boat will take you back to Narsaq in the afternoon. We will be surprised by enormous icebergs falling off from the Eqaloruutsit glacier and floating throw all the Sermilik Fjord. Sometimes, they are blocking the access to the harbor of Narsaq.

The morning of day 6 will be spent back in Narsaq. In the morning you can do what you prefer. You will have free time to visit the museum, fur shops or the fish market.

Later this day we will go for yet another hike. We want to show you as much as possible of what this land holds. Therefore we will be heading to the pontoon of Itilleq, where an easy hike to cross the Path of the Kings begins. Igaliku will be our destination. It is a little Inuit settlement inhabited by no more than 40 people. Igaliku, home of the ruins of Gardar (religious capital of Viking Greenland), is famous for being the most beautiful settlement in Greenland.

So what does Igaliku has? It has green hills, views of Einarsfjord and much more. It is such a peaceful little town and we can't wait to show this idyllic place.

You will have a relaxing morning in the quiet environment before hiking back to Itilleq’s pontoon.

An excursion to take a sea route to Qooroq Ice Fjord. Here we will find the most active glacier in southern Greenland. We will be sailing among blocks of ice until the density of ice is such that we can no longer continue. Just imagine the sight of huge icebergs floating everywhere around us!

From Qooroq we will continue the navigation to Narsarsuaq. Accommodation at Hotel Narsarsuaq. Twin/double room with private facilities.

Saving the best for last: the most famous hike in the area, the Flower Valley. This is what we'll be doing today. A breathtaking hike with sights of the Kiattut river and glacier. You will enjoy the view of this valley which got formed due to the retreat and the consequent glacial sedimentation with plenty of flowers.

We'll be hiking back to Narsarsuaq. In Narsasuaq you'll get time to visit the Blue West One Museum (former US military base frozen in time since the Second World War), or to prepare for the travels which's ahead of you.
