First day of winter

You arrive in Ilulissat, Disko Bay to be picked up by the staff from Hotel Avanna. While driving to the hotel, you will be amazed by the spectacular winter scenery. Everywhere you look, are beautiful views of either tundra, colourful houses or voyaging icebergs.

Arriving at the hotel, you check-in and settle in. Recover from your travels, or head out to explore.

Ilulissat is Greenland 3^rd largest town and is known for its spectacular sceneries of icebergs, sled dogs and beauty. Everywhere you go in town, you will be astonished by the beautiful views, running sleds and urban life.

Into the wild on dogsled

Your second day in Greenland is a free day. You can choose to go into the wild with Dogs!

You’ll meet your musher at the dogsled tracks. Before departing, the musher will show you what dogs are safe to approach and how to move around the sled. Dog sledding in an Arctic landscape is not only peaceful and beautiful, but an art to master. The musher and his dogs have a special bond, that allows them to work closely together while driving through the cold, uneven, and often steep Arctic tundra and sea ice.

Enjoy the awe-inspiring scenery, as the dogs will pull you across the snow-covered landscape. By evening, you will head out by bus to gaze upon the spectacular northern lights. While enjoying the sight of bright lights dancing across the night sky, your knowledgeable guide will tell you all about the auroras.

Ilulissat Icefjord Discovery

By now, you must be tired of the icebergs teasing you with their beauty from a distance. Therefore, we have planned for you to depart on a boat trip among icebergs. With a local captain, you’ll head out to sea and navigate around the giant icebergs of Ilulissat Icefjord.

The icebergs of Ilulissat Icefjord originates from one of the world’s most active glaciers, the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier. The beautiful scenery of Ilulissat Icefjord is not only created by the active glacier but also by the location. Did you know that the glacier is one of few, that actually reaches the sea? Because the glacier reaches the sea, the icebergs drifts and strand in the fjord, creating a scenery of dense icebergs.  We believe it will be one of the most impressive, but surreal nature sightings, that you will ever experience. The awesomeness of this impressive natural wonder will give you a true understanding of the Greenlandic nature’s grandeur.

Take advantage of winter

The day is at your leisure, we suggest that you take advantage of the Greenlandic winter's sheer wealth of activities.

Join an optional snowshoe hike to Sermermiut Valley.  Sermermiut Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage, as it is the home of ruins and remains from different Inuit migrations. While conquering the snow-covered landscape by snowshoe, you can enjoy a spectacular view of voyaging icebergs, originating from Ilulissat Icefjord. Before reaching a viewpoint that overlooks the sea of endless icebergs, your guide will stop the hiking tribe to tell all about the valley's history. The tour has a duration of 3 to 4 hours.

If you are in need of a kick of adrenaline and hold a valid driver license, we suggest that you book an optional snowmobile tour. The backcountry of Ilulissat offers great landscapes to be discovered. Our local guides and modern snowmobiles are a great way to explore snowy valleys and mountains, frozen lakes, fjords and the sea ice. No previous experience is required. We provide all the equipment and our experienced guide will teach how to drive the snowmobile.
