Niviarsiaq – Greenland’s National Flower

The national flower of Greenland belongs to the evening primrose family and is called Niviarsiaq (“young girl”) in Greenlandic (scientific name: Chamerion latifolium). 

These beautiful and hardy flowers bloom between June and September and were very prevalent around Kangerlussuaq when I visited in mid-August this year.

They are usually found in stony/sandy river environments so it was no surprise that I came across huge numbers of them as I explored the area around the Russell Glacier. 

However, I also came across them at different times along Arctic Circle Trail. That is the 160km hiking trail that stretches between Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut.  Whenever this happened, it always gave me a little lift, as they are one of my favorite wildflowers in Greenland.
