Sailing to Karale & Knud Rasmussen Glacier | Tasiilaq | East Greenland

Sail into the wonderful wilderness of the vast east coast and experience 2 massive glaciers side by side. We’ll venture into the astonishing Arctic landscape, sailing among icebergs of incredible shapes and sizes getting as close as safely possible to the Karale and Knud Rasmussen Glacier. The journey will start with a visit to the famous Bluie East Two, in an area named Ikateq. This place is often visited by tourists and locals as it used to be an airbase during the 2nd World War. The US military used this airfield to refuel their planes and as a medical station for the wounded. They used the area to navigate for search-and-rescue operations and, very importantly, to improve weather forecasts. Today it is mostly known as an open-air museum mostly due to the abandoned facilities, fuel drums and vehicles, and has been an occasional political issue in the US, as it is basically left behind trash, however, it is still a very special insight into our history during the war. After a short tour around the wreckage we will head on to Sermiligaaq Fjord. An enchanting area of jagged mountains and two glaciers colliding. Sermiliqaaq means “The Beautiful Glacier Fjord” and certainly lives up to its name. The two glaciers Karale Glacier and Knud Rasmussen are both elegant and massive giants trying tp dominate each other. A place where you with almost certainty will see one or both glaciers calve, a an unimaginable sight, with sounds of thunder as the ice crack off and hit the ocean. The views are astonishing but the sound is like nothing else, thrilling and scary, but you will be in safe hands with the sailor’s knowledge and experience. Depending on the conditions of the ice, we will go ashore nearby the Knud Rasmussen Glacier and enjoy our packed lunch. A chance to hike around is possible before we will be heading back to Tasiilaq. Do not miss out on this authentic and mind-blowing experience! Check out the booking availability by pressing ‘Choose a date’ above and book your adventure.

Whale Watching and Iceberg Safari | Tasiilaq | East Greenland

Join an evening cruise and go looking for whales, a unique experience surrounded by icebergs in all shapes and sizes!  Just moments after taking off from the harbour you'll see the very first icebergs in the fjord! While you enjoy the scenery, the captain will be scouting for whales of all kinds.  As soon as you reach the open sea there are good chances of spotting Humpbacks, Minkes and the enormous Fin whales. If we're extremely lucky we might even see the infamous Killer whales(Orcas)! The humpback whales are wonderful to find as they aren't as shy and will often show their white-spotted tail as they dive. As it can grow up to 18 meters it is a big whale, but it is also the most acrobatic of the large whales. The humpback can leap completely out of the water, a rare and incredible sight for the lucky few. Many of the whales come here for the large schools of capelin, a small fish similar to herring. These fish provide an excellent food source for both whales and the local people. A local delicacy is to dry them in the sun and eat them whole.  The orcas, however, are looking for young whale calves that aren't yet strong enough to defend themselves, and there are plenty of seals to come by as well. As we have set out in the evening we get to enjoy the sunset colours from it setting behind Greenland, a wonderful sight, sometimes with incredible colours. We can never guarantee to see whales but it is one of the best areas in Greenland to find them, If this sounds like the tour for you then go ahead and click 'Choose a date' above, and find a day that suits your next whale watching adventure!

Glacier Adventure by boat | Tasiilaq | East Greenland

Go on a boat tour to the beautiful Sermilik Icefjord, and experience the incredible Hann Glacier.  The journey will begin at Tasiilaq harbour and sail towards the southern part of Ammassalik Island where we'll slowly enter the Sermilik Fjord. A beautiful and breathtaking journey among icebergs of all shapes and sizes. Sermilik means “Icefjord” in Greenlandic, and the fjord certainly lives up to its name. Behind every corner you will find an iceberg bigger than the previous, giving every passing-by traveller the feeling of how small we are compared to the impressive giants of the sea. After about an hour into the journey, we will see the abandoned settlement Ikkatteq, situated on a small island. You will have the opportunity to go on shore and explore the village and take a sneak peek into the building where the school and church are joined. The small classroom with books and notes and the church are still neatly left behind. The view from the abandoned village overlooking the water is a breathtaking sight, imagine how the people in this settlement must have lived. Living off nature and very limited resources, both very fulfilling but also very difficult. The trip will shortly continue after the shortstop, heading north to Johan Pedersen Fjord. From what you have experienced up until this point, it will be nothing compared to what you are about to experience. The enchanting landscape is an astonishing and thrilling sight of ice sculptures, light blue water, and most importantly the Hann glacier. With the possibility of witnessing huge chunks of ice falling from the grand Greenland Ice Sheet. We will head ashore and enjoy our packed lunch while overlooking the front of the glacier, and a chance to hike around the area. After approximately two hours we will head back the way we came and head back to town. This grand adventure is waiting for you, all you have to do is pull on your warmest hat and bring your binoculars for this adventure! City tour and hike to the flower valley | Tasiilaq | East Greenland

Join a city walk and Flower Valley hike to get the ultimate day tour with an experienced and knowledgeable guide who will answer all the question you might have. The cultural tour will start just across from the local Workshop Stunk, down the hill from the hotel. We will head into the workshop where we will be greeted by smiling and friendly locals who will astonish you with their handmade crafts, and will happily answer any questions you might have, and your guide will translate. Many locals in Tasiilaq do not speak English very well, but that does not mean they aren’t eager to tell you stories of all kinds and tell you all about Greenland. The East Coast is well known for its very talented local artists in the handicraft area. The tour will continue downhill towards the small grocery store and post office, where we might be able to take a look inside, before heading to the museum. The museum has many historical treasures and a very interesting background, that you will be able to hear about. The many objects displayed in the building, are from the whole East coast. The museum was build in 1903 and was the local church until the town grew larger and therefore too small for all the locals. The walk will continue enroute to the hospital and the church. When at the church we will be able to walk up to one of the canes situated just above the church grounds, a view overlooking the town and nearby area. You will hear about the famous men who were part of the founding of Tasiilaq. Before we head into the Flower Valley, we will stop at the tourist office Skæven, which is also a souvenir shop. A cozy little house with a white picket fence out front, and beautifully decorated interior. The souvenir shop displays handicrafts from jewelry, household items to wall decorations all made by the gifted locals. The Flower Valley is situated just behind the cemetery, and as we pass the graveyeard where you will see the many white crosses neatly decorated with plastic flowers. As we follow the path leading us further in the beautiful terrain surrounded by mountains, hilltops and lakes. Our destination will be the twin waterfall, a breathtaking sight and therapeutic sound. A place that will soothe and enchant any traveler coming across this outstanding place. Enjoy the quietness and paradise-like area, before heading back to town.
