Frequently Asked Questions

About Northern Lights Tours

1. When is the season for northern lights tours?

It depends on where you go, but it’s generally from October to April.

2. It's not possible to see northern lights in the summer?

The northern lights are out there all year round, but you need a clear, dark sky to see them. In the summer, you can’t see them because it doesn’t get dark enough at night.

In northern Greenland, the season is short, but you can have long hours of dark skies. In southern Greenland, the season is long, and you can even enjoy summer activities like hiking and kayaking, and watch out for northern lights during the night in August and September.

3. Can I see northern lights anywhere in Greenland?

Almost, but the northernmost towns in Greenland are too far up north to see them frequently. Everywhere else, from the southern tip of Greenland to Uummannaq in the north, and on the east coast, are fine locations for northern lights.

Kangerlussuaq, the main hub airport of Greenland, is a fantastic place for northern lights because of its stable weather. You can almost count on clear skies, because it’s far inland at the bottom of a long fiord. When the sea freezes up the north, the sea ice has the same effect to give stable weather in coastal towns.
