Northern lights hike | Uummannaq

Go on a northern lights hike and experience the magic of the night and the waving lights. This tour is for everyone who wishes to see the lights and learn more about them. We will tell you all about the lights in both a scientific and cultural perspective, giving you a better understanding of the beauty which fills the polar nights. The winter can be long and dark, but luckily in Uummannaq, the night sky often shares its beauty with Aurora Borealis, otherwise known as northern lights. It is nothing short of a sublime experience when the lights show under a dark starry night with varying colours and strength. The local Inuit have several stories and explanations connected to the lights, one of which tells us that it is our ancestors playing a type of football with a walrus skull with such a powerful force that they emit light. In these modern times, the northern lights are not only a phenomenon in the sky but also a key ingredient in Greenlandic Coffee. Greenlandic coffee is like Irish coffee full of alcohol which will warm up your very soul on a cold evening. The same goes with the love story that comes with the making of Greenlandic coffee. We will start the hike by the lake, getting away from the citys’ lightpollution, out here we’ll go in depth about this natural phenomenon, including why you shouldn’t whistle after the lights. It is a cold pleasure to be outside in the polar nights which is why we will bring hot coffee and tea as well as make Greenlandic coffee for those who wish to taste it (highly recommended). The whole tour takes around 3 hours, so there is plenty of time for talking, hiking, telling stories, admiring and taking photos of the northern lights. It can be difficult to capture the lights with a camera but the guide can help advise with settings so you can immortalize this night.

Cultural Sailing Tour | Uummannaq | North Greenland

Explore several historically and culturally significant sites in the beauty of the Uuummannaq fjord. On this tour you will travel by boat and go on land at several different locations, as the captain shares his knowledge, and tells stories of the areas and their significance. You will head out from the port of Uummannaq, towards the Nuussuaq peninsula and the old settlement of Qilakitsoq where you go ashore and explore the area. Qilakitsoq is the site at which the 8, 500 year old, world famous mummies of Greenland were found, here you will travel back in time and learn about the conditions of life 500 years ago. After visiting the Qilakitsoq site, you will head onwards to the abandoned settlement of Uummannatsiaq. There you'll enjoy the included lunch sitting amongst the old abandoned houses, creating a chilling atmosphere as the captain tells stories of tragedy and prosperity in the early 1900's. When your belly is satisfied, you will start a short hike up the mountain, where the Greenlandic wildlife thrives. Arctic foxes, hares and various birds are possible sightings if you keep your eyes open. After the hike, it's time to continue by boat to the Great Island, which is well known for its rich amounts of berries, and aptly named Paarnat - "The berries" hereafter. Here you'll go and collect some juicy crowberries and the mouth-watering blueberries, which ripen in August and throughout most of September. This will also be accompanied by a good Crowberry Schnaps, a luscious alcoholic drink, that'll warm you up from your toes to your fingertips. From here it's time to head back to Uummannaq, where the voyage will take you past several spectacular waterfalls, gushing down from more than a 150 meters. There is always a chance of seeing whales, seals and various seabirds as you sail along the fjord, so look out for bursts of water vapour and small black heads curiously popping above the surface of the water. The full tour takes around 8 hours, which you'll leave with unforgettable memories, so what are you waiting for? You can try ice fishing, ride a dog sled and live in the magnificent Arctic nature. You do not have to shoot anything but can chase motifs with your camera. You will go on the sea ice by dogsled, passing by icebergs frozen into the fjord. The only sound you hear is the swishing of the sled over snow. The pace of the dogsled is about the speed of a bicycle - perfect to take in the landscape. The Inuit in Greenland have made their living from the sea for generations, and up north here in Uummannaq, there are many that live the traditional way. In the winter, when the sea freezes over, the fiord becomes a highway for dogsleds to travel to fishing and hunting grounds, and to settlements in the area. Life out on the sea ice is what sustain the families here. At the same time, technology in Greenland is modern, with handheld GPSs, and everyone following on Facebook. Listen to the snow under your boots, marvel at how bright the moonlight is on icebergs, and share a laugh with the locals.
