Frequently Asked Questions
About Ilulissat Icefjord
1. What is special about Ilulissat Icefjord?
Ilulissat Icefjord, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage, is full of ice all year round. This is because the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier at the bottom of the fjord is one of the fastest moving in the world, and the amount of icebergs it releases into the Icefjord is the largest in the northern hemisphere.
The mouth of the fjord is shallow, which make the icebergs ground, so the fjord becomes choked with ice. The icebergs are truly massive, like islands of ice, dwarfing the boats that take you to them.
2. When is the best season to go to Ilulissat Icefjord?
You can see the icebergs all year round, and they are impressive in each season. In the summer, midnight sun tours among the icebergs are popular, with the low sun painting the sky, water and icebergs. A tour on a sunny day will give you amazing shades of blue and green, and in overcast or foggy weather, they loom mysteriously white in a monotone landscape - a favorite for many photographers. In the winter, boats sail through waters that can sometimes be like sailing through slush ice.
There are short hikes to the Icefjord in all seasons. In the winter, with luck, you will see northern lights reflecting on the icebergs.
3. How do I get to the glacier at the Icefjord?
The glacier front that calves icebergs lies 50 km (30 miles) from the mouth of the fjord and is inaccessible by either boat or land. A sightseeing tour by aircraft will take you over the Icefjord to the glacier front and inland ice, and is the only way you can see the glacier at the bottom of the fjord.
4. Can I walk to the Icefjord from the town?
Yes, it only takes half an hour to have a magnificent view. It’s easy to walk to Sermermiut, a valley overlooking the Ilulissat Icefjord, where there used to be settlements from different ages. If you take a guided tour, you will hear about the different Inuit cultures that lived here starting 4000 years ago.
There are 3 hiking routes too, marked by different colors. The short routes will take you an hour or two from town and back, and the long trail will take more than half a day.
